Ticking? Or possible knocking?

My 696 sounded a bit odd this morning.  Almost like a dull knocking, more like a constant ticking when idle.  Couldn't tell while riding as the bike drowned it out and I had earplugs in.  May ride home late without to earplugs to notice.

Is this because of the cooler weather or maybe it did it the whole time I've had it (2 months)?

Has only 2300 miles in change on it and have been putting 89 in it for gas.

Apparently differenct octanes can "knocking", so you could try the next one up. ???

Back to $3.35 91 octane....

Been going to BP mostly too as there are many close to me when I need gas.  Good bad anyone?

my aircooled monster runs fine on 87.
there are many threads on octane ratings and their effects on our bikes.
in short, run your bike on the lowest octane that it will run properly on. if it runs on 87, run it on 87. when you run higher octanes than necessary, your bike develops carbon deposits that decrease performance/fuel mileage...
at least that's how i've come to understand it.

Which year and model Monster?

So I shouldn't go up in octane but down to 87 next time?

At 10.7-1 compression you should probably use the 91.

Sure you weren't just hearing the valves...and you've never noticed it before? That's kind of a mechanical or ticking sound.

Personally, I'd run a tank of 87, then 89, then 91. Listen to it during all of those, track gas mileage, and note how it "feels". Then decide.

I've always run 87 in my 2V motors...but the 696 has higher compression, so it may like higher octane fuel.

So does the manual for all Ducatis. Most run just fine on 87 though.  :)

I was told to try a lower octane as well to help with over heating. I've filled up 5+ times with 89 vice 91 and having had any unusual sounds yet.

The valves are a good possibility as well, just regular mechanical sounds.

Had to stop by Soho Ducati today for something and asked one of the sales guys, he says it's normal, wet clutch, bike breaking in.  I'll try the 87 though.
