Just rode through 4 miles of newborn asphalt and the opaque debris cloud that comes with it. My tires are paved... Last time it was fresh tar snakes. Why the hell would they patch up a road right before they repaved the whole thing? Took hours in the garage with a putty knife and a can of goof-off. Here we go again...

They do that so the new asphalt doesn't sink into the old road damage, causing the new road to be make the beast with two backsed up from the start.

Ah... thought they tore up the old road first. Sometimes they scrape them down, but they still repair spots before resurfacing. You could always use another route.

Ah... thought they tore up the old road first. Patching cracks in the old road prior to paving is to help prevent what is called "reflection cracking". If there's a crack in the old pavement, one will usually appear in the new pavement at the same location due to poor support of the new pavement at the crack location. The patching is marginally effective, but better than doing nothing. They should tear up the old road for best results...that costs a lot more $$ though. A 2-inch "overlay" is much cheaper than a new road which would typically have at least 4-inch thick pavement. New roads also have higher demo and subgrade preparation costs.

I commute to work and there are 4 routes possible. Two weeks ago ALL Four were ripped up - the highway scraped for 5 miles (no fun) and the route i chose was 2 miles of 1-2" gravel. It make the beast with two backsing sucked.
Cursed Obama the whole way - guess the good news is nice smooth roads for the rest of the fall season now that some are getting paved.

Blame the "stimulus money". Same thing for me.....all roads leading to work were torn up at the same time. Finally, they got 1 of the ways done, so now I have mostly construction free way to work (for a couple more days).

A friend of mine jokingly speculated that tar snakes are put in as "speed bumps" for motorcycles.

Why didn't you turn around??? It started out perfectly dry... [moto] then it got gradually stickier until I saw the smoking trucks ahead and looked down at my tire and it was too late. Boiling frog syndrome... Single-lane traffic didn't help either, but in retrospect I should have pulled over and waited for it to change directions. Lesson learned!
