I kinda think I have the "wheelbarrow look" going on, but I don't know if it will look odd with shorter cans, and I'm not sure if teh tips are press fit into the thing.  Also, if I should chop it, how short should I go...

Anyways, what do you guys think?

At least chop them so their even with the rear wheel/tire.  If it were me, I'd chop them so they were in between the rear light and the wheel/tire.

that's what I was thinking -- maybe just past the seat/plates so it'll flow better with the tire.  It's hard for me to visualize though...

I'd chop them to the seat at least, it's fairly easy to do.

so it's not press-fit?  The rivets actually hold it in place???

if it's anything like the stock cans there's probably spot welds on the inside in addition to the rivets.  Those welds can be a PITA to get through...but overall it's a very doable job.  IMO the cans are a bit long, but even more so those mid pipes seem like they are considerably longer than they should be.  I would think the optimal situation would be if the mid pipes and the cans were each a bit shorter, getting the overall shorter effect you're looking for without making the cans really really short.  This would, of course, cause a lot more work, so I would probably just stick with chopping the cans.

I chopped mine to the edge of the "DUCATI" which was about 3". Now it's to the edge of the tire. There's someone on here who cut them down to the size of soup cans. The ends are welded, but can be taken off with a screw driver, hammer, dremmel, force, and whatever else you can find. I riveted them back on when I was done chopping.

thats exactly what i was thinking. those mid pipes look about a mile long, and just cuttin the cans will give you the soup cans effect

a lot more work as jfisher2 said, but to do it right i think you need to reweld those midpipes

p.s. nice lookin bike! you should tie off those loose dp bra mounts before they whip the paint off your frame!

Ya, it is more work, but I would leave the cans alone and chop the pipe.

your pipe's too long (that's what she said).

I think I see rivet straps in your picture? can we get a closer pic of the cans? If they are anything like most aftermarket cans you should be able to drill out the rivets, cut, and then just rivet.

Alternatively you might look into cutting the midpipe as others have suggested.

This seems like the optimal solution to me too.

here's some more pics (pre tail chop).  I can't really cut the mid pipe because the cans will smack into the rear peg assembly if the mid pipe was shorter.  I contemplated getting teh mid pipes rebent, but I'm not sure I can find someone to do it in my area who'd be able to do a good job for a reasonable price (mandrel bends are $50 a pop in teh Charlotte, NC area).

Do you have to put a red flag on the end of those to warn tailing drivers?
