My first Monster impression + tips on modifications

Hi everybody~

So as you can tell by my huge number of posts and the lack of knowledge of Ducs,, i'm a n00b.
I haven't been riding that long as well (2 yrs but 4 bikes???)
I guess I was looking for the right bike.. 2004 R6--> 2003 RC51 (stolen :'()-->CBR600RR-->S2R
My S2R is my first naked and first Ducati.
I can tell you that the bike is the most comfortable I've ownd so far. The R6 is actually a short second~

So I feel like the handle bars are a little bit too far apart. So just wondering if you guys could point me to some nice clipons thats the same height as stock but maybe a little bit closer toward each other..

The biggest dilemma I have is the exhaust on the bike. i love the dual on one side over the wheel look. But I also like the clean look of no exhaust hanging off the side (a-la ex-box)
So what do I do??? Change the look of the bike completely or go with something louder but still in the same location to keep the spirit of the design..

for the record, my monster is also my first nuda, and ill never go back!!!

you have chosen quite a nice mount there. i kinda wish i had held out until i could afford an S2r, but thats a sidestory.

as far as clipons, man there are tons of options out there. i went with some DRIVEN clips, which are very nice, and cheap (150) but they dont have risers, and work best with my forks (gsxr) which stick well out above the triple.

there are so many its hard to list, hopefully someone will chime in with a nice adjustable set with risers. i know lots of people run them. just check your fork size (i think my 750 is 50mm) and then you can google for clipons that size. stopintime has a particularly nice set that mounts below the triple and rises above it. you may want to ask him what brand that is. (or search i know hes said it before but i forget)

rizoma also makes a nice set with a triple, but its $$$ and i dont like how the bars arent the universal slide in type, just my preference.
you could also check out suburban machinery bars, for a nice alternative to clipons that are easier to mount, and retain the high position of stock bars


for exhaust..... well id definitely go with what looks the best to you, because you are going to have to live with it, and exhausts for these bikes can be a hefty investment. personally i love the xbox or boom tubes because i like that wheel out there naked and alone for the world to see

First, welcome to the club. Which S2R did you go with? Judging by the color I would guess the 800 (I don't think that the 1000 came in orange) which may actually end up being lucky for you on your second question.

Here is an interesting discussion between the Swatt 3.5'' and the Speedymoto Tall Boy clipons. Both fit the stock bike well without having to change the triple, although you might need a spacer for the reservoirs, I can't remember if the 800 has pee-cups or coffins. EDIT: OK, so for most clipon options on the 800, you will need a spacer for your reservoirs.

That link is to a thread I recently started on options for my S2R1K. A search will yield more. The good news for you is that there are a number of options on the 800 that overlap with the S4R so you should have an easier time with finding what you want. Like Redial mentioned, the exhaust upgrade can be pretty pricy and as you start messing with it you quickly get into the realm of having to sort our fueling.

On that point, if you do have the 800, you are again in luck as you can just go PC3 on top of the stock ECU and tune the hell out of it. Us S2R1K owners get to deal with closed-loop hell. Check out the sticky in the Accessories and Mods section if you want to find out about the bullet you dodged, or (potentially) got hit by.

If you go w/ the Swatt's, pm StopinTime.  He is the Swatt expert around here.

BTW, after you do those and the exhaust, you will be doing the suspension (front and rear) and the front brakes and...it never ends.

The good news is you won't find a cooler place w/ more helpfull people than this forum.  The wealth of information is staggering.  Anything you think you might want to do has probably already been done and documented on here.  Check out the tutorial section for some great how-to lessons.

The other thing is that you MUST post pics of your mods. when you are done.  Nothing exists w/o pics.  If you get stuck on something, first use the search function on that topic.  If that doesn't help, post away and the cavalry will come running.

:edit: concerning the SM bars. I'm not too sure how the S*R bars will affect rise, but the 'standard' monster bars are def. lower than stock. these bars were perfect, ergonomically speaking, for me and my rearsets/seat height. YMMV

they make bars for monsters. it's just that your S2R bars are different from the 'normal' monster bars, which have tubing of identical diameters.

they're a lil'pricey, but are very nice

I wanted more sweep than the SM bars offer, but other than that they are great. Stock is 18 degrees, SM is 24 and other clip ons 30, maybe even 40. Width is the same, but I guess you can cut them - just would have to drill new holes for the controls.
 
I thought the 3.5" inch Swatt clip ons would be the same height as stock, but at the grip they are ~two inches lower. I was surprised and disappointed, but after a while it turned out to be perfect for me - long arms and aggressive body position.

The biggest selling point for the SM bars versus clip ons is that you don't have to paint/grind/SpeedyMoto your top triple and you won't need the $40 MonsterParts coffin spacers.

Exhaust: your bike is Euro 2 which means it will accept "any" slip on exhaust, it requires only affordable minor fuel mixture adjustments. Another story if you also change to open air box and/or cat-/udderfree midpipes. You're still new to your bike - I recommend hanging out for a while, read, search and ask - then decide about exhaust.

Ask around the local board (scroll down the main page) as to whether anyone has the Subterreanean bars on their monster.  Then you can check 'em out in person.

I mentioned the pros of the SM bars, but it's true that you might not like the sweep angle. You'd might like more sweep. Going from 18 to 24 degrees isn't, IMO, very radical, but they will adjust to your chosen down angle which is equally important. So, a +1 on trying to find one to check out.

The two part clip ons in the picture (SpeedyMoto?) are like most clip ons, but also has bars with a bend in them for a lot more adjustability. MotoWheels have them as a separate item (pair) at $50. They will fit the Swatt (SMP) riser clip ons as well.
