Forgive my ignorance if this is a stupid question that I should know.

Recently noticing my brake pedal has gotten a little softer in feel and pressure when I press for the rear brake.  Had a lot of squealing with the back brake since I bought the bike (had 1400 or so miles on it when I got it in July).  Squealing is now gone.  Only 2600 miles on my bike so doubt it's due for pads (I don't brake hard).  Would it possibly be air in the line?  Another issue?

Not sure about the feel, and I do not think your pads are won. My rear brakes started squeaking at 300 miles. I think it is pretty common for the stockers to squeak. I will sit back and watch this thread turn into " just dont use your rear brake" post-a-thon.

My buddies new 696 needed new brake pads to be ordered at the 600 mile service.  They were singing/squeeling like crazy when he brought it in, and they told him the pads were nasty worn out.  Something is amuck...I will post when the new pads come and they replace them.  Maybe then I will know something about why it happened.

Bleed the rear brake, or better yet, if still under warranty, go to the dealer so you have a paper trail.  If air did get in it will happen again, but it is possible the brakes were not bled correctly at the factory.
