Please let me know how much of a problem this wrong ECU is...

The guy I bought my 05 monster s2r 800 from put a new ECU in it.  He told me it was off of the exact same bike (apparently that's what the guy he bought it from told him).  It was running like absolute crap and when I brought it to the dealer they informed me that it was not the right ECU...it was off a Multistrada 1000.  He suggested I have him install the right ECU.  I told him I really didn't have that kind of money so he said he would see what he could do.

I got the bike back.  The guy said he was amazed at how nice it was running.  I took it home and it doesn't seem to have any problems at all...it runs great.  He said the ideal thing would be to get the right ECU for the bike.  So I'm wondering...

Does it really matter a lot?
Will I do damage to the bike in any way?
What would the point of getting the "monster s2r 800" ECU if it rides great with this one?
Will it be a big deterent when I go to sell it?

This may be a simplistic point of view....

i would think the only issue would be running rich, seeing how the ecu is tuned for a 1000 and your running an 800. that would also depend on what size injectors the 1k and the 800 come with, if they have the same size injectors, then your way rich, if the 800 has a smaller injector then the problem might not be as bad.   as i have no knowledge of ducatis injection system cuz i have a carbie,  im speaking from expierence with tuning car engines.  if the dealer was able to dial out some of the fuel then you should be fine.

Another way to look at this problem is how it started.
Why would the original owner replace the ecu with another ecu for another bike. Its not like you can get a used ECU to work with the bike becasue of its immobilizer. You would have to get a new ecu anyway. and if an ECU fries for no reason at all, then that would be something that he should of taken up with DNA. Unless he did the damage himself, but if thats the case then what else fried?

Yeah...he replaced the ECU before I bought it because he only had one black key for it and I said I'd buy the bike if he put a new ECU in.

Gotta agree with ducpainter.  Why spend a lot of money to fix somethging that works?

I remember reading that several of the DP ecus for the s4Rs had multistrada labels on them.  The big guess is that Ducati had a pile of these and they have - apparently nobody else though - the ability to reprogram to anything they want.  I would give you a 50/50 chance that it is the right computer - especially since it seems to be running well with the new tuning.

Here's another vote for not trying to fix something that ain't broken.  I think you'll find that the 1000s and 800s have the same size throttle bodies and the same injectors, so no worries there.  If your dealer got it running right, you should be good to go.

many dp ecu have mts1000 on them.  you need to get someone with the DDS or technoresearch VDSTS to hook up to it and find out the ecu part number.  it's displayed on the DDS and VDSTS once they're connected.  look up that part number and you will tell you what it is.

Just inspect your spark plugs.  If they're white or black, you'll want to get the right ECU.  If they're a nice tawny color, you're golden.

Yes, but you have to kill the engine at different rpm to really see whats going. Bring your throttle to 3,000 5000 and 7000, and kill the engine at each, pull the plugs, and write down what you see or take a pic.
