It's actually not a good idea.

I agree, but I still like to see it.  [evil]

It's actually not a good idea. The referee just wasn't paying attention. When you put someone out like that there is a chance that you could dislodge plaque in the arteries that could get lodged down the line elsewhere. We are allowed to apply the carotid restraint at work but only one time and we have to release if they tap. Then we take them to the hospital.

Plaque in the arteries? I wouldn't think that would be a problem in guys so young and with that type of conditioning. That may be an issue if both these guys were in their forties or had a history of blood doping. Isn't there some carotid restraint in most choke holds in MMA? There is even some in the Thai clinch if you squeeze both sides of the neck with the wrists rather than just pulling on the head. To me if dislodging plaque were a big problem then there we would see fighters get out of a submission attempt or clinch and start stroking from the plaque going from the carotid straight into the brain.

You are right about the ref he should have realized the guy was out on his feet and ended the fight to get blood flow back to the brain. I once saw a guy nearly die from a Guillotine at a local show because the ref wasn't in position to see that he was already passed out and it took the crowd yelling at the ref to get him to end the fight. That would have been really bad for the sport.

Any one can have crap in the systme, but I agree that most of these guys are probably in pretty good shape.

Carotid restraint in MMA? The rear naked choke is the cartoid restaint. We just don't say choke in law enforcement anymore AND if you are choking them you are doing it wrong. Not to mentionm if you do choke them you run the risk of snapping the windpipe.  The video I linked for instance. The guy passed out due to lack of blood (and in turn oxygen) to the brain, not because he couldn't breathe.

Most chokes in MMA are 'blood chokes'.

Yep, except maybe for the guillotine, which can be either depending on how you catch it. Triangles and rear nakeds are both "blood chokes".

I hate SPIKE!  It seems like every gahdamn week they start the fight late and throw off my TiVo!!

BTW..If you don't want to read the results..stay off here until you've seen the fight.

Exact reason I don't even go into the Race section on Sat/Sun until I see the race first.

I hope Serra sends Hughes into retirement dripping blood.

Weren't you first in line to get an autographed copy of Hughes' book?
