Yet another valve job Q

So I felt this board was lacking another valve adjustment question.
I decided to attack the valve job on my own and ass backwards like I do everything else.
Basically I need a recommendation on what shims to go for and any other advice you guys might have.

on my 03 m620 dark ie
I ve checked clearances 3 times and  my results are:

Vertical head:
                   Intake: Opener:   .08mm
                           Closer:   .07mm

                   Exhaust: Opener: .13mm
                            Closer: .03mm
Horizontal head:
                   Intake: Opener: .11mm
                           Closer:  .07mm

         Exhaust: Opener: .13mm
                            Closer: .07mm

After a trip to a dealer I was told I incorrectly measured the shims themselves.
My first attempt was:

Vertical head:
                 Intake: Opener:   6.51mm
                           Closer:  8.23mm

                   Exhaust: Opener: 7.18mm
                            Closer: 8.34mm
Horizontal head:
                   Intake: Opener: 6.49mm
                           Closer: 8.54mm

         Exhaust: Opener: 7.15mm
                            Closer: 8.40mm

So I failed to use a shim tool, so I made my own. I understand how to get the opener shim but im  not a 100percent positive how to figure out the closing shim size. My guess is measure the tool then subtract the difference from the tool and shim.

I didnt re measure all the shims just the intake valve on the vertical head:
open: (old measurements) 6.51mm -> 3.50mm(new)
close: 8.23mm -> 1.35mm

are these more reasonable?
Heres some pics of what I made and how I and measuring.

So i rechecked all the valves sizes

vertical head intake
                   opener: 3.50mm
                    closer:  1.35mm
                   exhaust
                    opener: 4.14mm
                    closer:  1.32mm
horizontal intake
                    open: 3.51mm
                    closer: 1.56mm

               exhaust
                    open: 4.12mm
                    closer:1.45mm
My only problem is that the closing shims seem too small, according to emsduc.com they only have shims that start at 5.5mm So I feel like I Measured wrong again.

It doesn't make sense that the ranges on the shims would be so different between the 2V and 4V kits

The 4V kits are listed as containing  "Closers- 19 Shims, from 2.65 mm to 3.55 mm in .05 mm increments "

Your numbers do seem too small though.

Yea my numbers for the closing shims were too small. I figured out that I was measuring my whole tool not to the point where the shim rests on. so i had to add 5.58 to each number giving: 6.93, 6.90, 7.14, 7.03.
which are much more resonable.
I now see the benefit of buying a tool rather than making one but it works and just gives a little harder numbers to deal with.

So for choosing shim size do i order for 0 clearence

say for example the 6.93 closing shim has a .07 clearence, which implies a 7.00 shim to get to a zero clearence.

Can I go for a 7.00 or do I Have to do up to the next size?

My experience is if you do it solely by the math you'll get some wrong shims.

If you can afford it I'd buy the one you 'think' you need and the next larger size. You can always sand the larger one if you were wrong, or use it on the next adjustment, or trade it with someone for one you need.

Not that it helps much now but you could have just posted on the local board and found out that one of your local monster riders has a 2V shim kit, the shim measuring tools, and all the other tools and experience needed to check and adjust 2V Ducs.

Yeah very true, probably should have but Ive got a good habit of doing everything ass backwards. will definitely keep that in mind for the future tho.
