I have just sold my 620 and looking for a S4R.

Found one 2007 S4R with 6000KM on the clock. All Standard, 0 modification.

The issue is, the tank is a metal instead of plastic tank which I read throughout this forum, anything year above 2004 will be plastic tank.  Huh?

Second issue, how do I check whether is the new S4R with 130HP or the older S4R with 117HP without dyno. Is there any difference visually on the engine itself? I've read somewhere that the 130HP S4R is using the L-Twin Low Sump engine Roll Eyes , whatever is that means..

Appreciate any inputs from anyone.

Thanks.

Easiest visual clue: Belt Covers

Old Desmoquattro:

New(er) Testastretta:

Also note the deep sump of the Testastretta. kind of looks like a square funnel at the bottom vs the flat bottom of the DQ.

Got it. Thanks All  waytogo

Just got back from the dealership and I did inquire 'bout these. They say the Testastretta are using the 999 engine whereas the previous one using the 996 engine.

I have notice the sump too and you are absolutely right.

The unit that I have found is not a testrastretta and it is an 06 model but registered in O7.

Should I get this normal S4R or give sometime to search for the S4R Testastretta?

Price for a used Testastretta would be around 3~4K USD more than the S4R that I have found.

And don't compare the price, coz the cost for cars and bikes are ridiculous high here.

Regards

Simon

i have the desmoquattro and i don't see anything wrong with that model, the 996 engine won quite a few races if i'm not mistaken;-) the main diff that i would really notice is that the newer one is much lighter than the desmoquattro. Both are very good engine though.

I have the testastretta so I am obviously biased, but I see it as a classic. The last Monster with a superbike engine. The first engine to have the improved valve design. Available Ohlins on the S. I think it comes is better colors too.

So I was thinking about replacing my 05 996 monster with a newer 999 Monster.

I have about 40k on the current one. Is it true the newer engine is much more smoother than the previous generation?

so that is how you tell the difference between the motors.. that is actually very helpful on first glance i wouldn't have noticed it until you show both side by side.

what years is the older motor used and when did it switch to the newer one?

personally i would go for the monster with the metal gas tank only because you can use magnetic tank bags and such easier.

There's absolutely nothing "wrong" with the earlier 996 desmoquattro monster.  I put about 17,000 mi. on my 04 s4r and have something like 33,000 on this S4Rs.

The deep sump engine is a little smoother, no doubt and with 40 mm intake valves breaths better from 8000 rpm up, but the torque curves and HP curves are very similar up to the 8000 mark.  Most people don't use either engine much above 8K unless they are a little loony and ain't scared of the law.  Police

Believe me, the 996 is all the motorcycle most people (you) will ever need.  And the Blue with the white stripe is one of the prettiest bikes ever.

At 6000 mi. the s4r 996 you are talking about is barely broken in and you will love it.

You can thank me later.  Grin

996 S4R went through '06, and were the last of the steel tanks.

The '06 S4Rs was the first of the Testastretta, and they had plastic tanks, along with every other Monster.

I wouldn't expect a steel tank to fit an S4Rs or S4Rt.
Never tried it.

+1 on LA's comments.
My S4 has plenty of scoot.

Thanks all and +1 on LA comment.  waytogo

And Sally, I like your thinking as the S4Rs is a classic, if I can find a used one and not to pricey, I will consider getting it.

My upgrade is because of the SSA and the dry clutch which I got hook on. Never the less, termis will be going in, open clutch cover and more blings when the mod bug hits me.

Here are some cellphone pics of the S4R I intended to get. Still have not negotiated with the owner's yet.

The mileage is <6000KM which is around +-3800miles, how many miles till the bike get properly run-in?
