I am going to be visiting Japan.

I am planing on taking some panoramic shots either stitching or a single 16x9 size.

I will be doing lots of traveling while I am the so I don't feel like bringing my DSLR and all my lenses with me.

I was looking at the G11 or LX3. I need something that has manual features like these camera's since I am going to be doing long exposures and bracket photograph and RAW images for HDR.

Any other suggestions?

Canon Powershot all the way for point and shoot. I really liked my Samsung NV24HD too.

I'm looking for something as a backup/carry round camera to my DSLR.  Right now it looks like either a Canon SX200IS or a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3.  I like the Canon for the manual controls but the Pano wins with image quality. If you're looking for a good shooter with manual controls the Canon is awesome.

The price is right for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 but the images get pretty noisy above Iso 200. The g11 is pretty clean up to ISO 800 for a point and shoot that is. Its no DSLR =)

Here is a G11 Iso 800 test shot I downloaded online and then I ran it through a quick neatimage pass.

Looks like Iso 200 or less to me now =)

These are all from my powershot S70. I think they came out ok. They have some editing but not much.

Olympus Stylus Tough

It can take a hit - I have teenage daughters that seem to find a reason to throw things across the room.  While I don't recommend it, this has fallen and works like a charm.  Can take pictures under water.  Panoramic pictures come out REALLY well with little effort.

Point and shoot... indeed!!    [thumbsup]
