I would have just let them go. IMO there should be no Mandatory Tip. Good service you get tip. Bad service you get no tip.

On that note I am going to japan next week. My Japanese friends have told me you dont tip there and if you try to they take offense... Man I am going to love Japan  ;D

I hate mandatory tips as well. In general, for good service I'll tip more than 18% unless I get stuck with a mandatory tip, in which case I let it ride.

Though, if I were in this situation I'd have probably paid it and never went back instead of making a stink.

Usually things like that are written on the menu... ie "parties over 6 gratuity included"

If they didn't like it, they shouldn't have eaten there.  If it wasn't written on the menu or at the front of the place then I can understand why they were mad.

On the other hand, people that don't tip are scumbags!  I leave 15% when I get horrible service.  Leaving no tip at all is unacceptable IMO.  A lot of waiters/waitresses get paid below minimum wage to account for their tips.  If the service is that bad, call the manager over and say something instead of being a cheapskate and hoping the Waiter doesn't open the check before you leave.

Wow 15% for bad service. I normally tip 20% for average to good service but it should be my right to tip or not to tip. Bad service should get no tip IMO. So your saying a waiter or waitress no matter how skilled or professional they are deserve at least 15% tip  ???

Its not my fault they suck at there job or have a bad attitude or they get paid little. They dont deserve jack from me unless they are nice and attentive and treat me well etc. Why should I give them money for doing a shitty job?

And Yes I know this is sort of Derby. Not the story but this topic  ;)

It's against the law (at least in CA) to pay them less them minimum wage. They are taxed 8% of their gross sales against their expected tips. I tip well for good service 20-30%. I tip very poorly for bad service maybe 5%. If I get unusually bad service, which would have to include rudeness on the servers part, I leave one quarter.....25 cents. You don't want to leave nothing..they might think you forgot. The idea that we need to tip at least 15% no matter what is ludicrous. Servers EARN their tips.

Yes.

They way I look at it, most likely they aren't doing this job because they like it or it is fun.  Most customers are not polite.  They deals with tons of assholes a day, and for the most part have to put up with it.  As terrible as it sounds it's a pity 15%.  Just like I give change to almost every homeless person that asks for it.

The fact that I had to wait an extra ten minutes for my food probably won't affect my day.  $10 or $15 might change their day though...

I always make a point to be polite to anyone handling my food, barbers, and dentists. With that said, I can't tell you how many times barbers have jacked up my hair then been rude after I ask about it, so I give no tip, or waiters make no point in apologizing for never coming to check up on you until you need the bill, but even then I will leave 5-10% in case I can't get to the car fast enough after paying.

Bottom line is I know people who are SOBs and treat there customers like trash so your saying you would reward them for this which is what I dont understand. I respectfully disagree with you =)

i have to disagree with you here as others do.  rewarding someone for bad work only gets the person to do more bad work.  I don't see how encouraging someone to do "terrible work" by giving them money regardless will make their day better at all.

yes customers are not always good either, that is why if the server wants they can give them bad service and then they won't come back again. simple.  also they will get no tip so if you know the person is giving you a hard time don't give them good service they won't be back.

But hey its your money you can do whatever you want with it.  Heck you can burn it if you want, and be happy about it, that is cool with me.  But don't call people scumbags that don't like to burn money like you do. that just makes no sense at all.

Bad wait service means little to no tip. Yes, some customers are assholes. And that should reflect on MY service how?
Bad kitchen service does not reflect on the wait staffs tip.

For good service I leave 20% for sure. She cute? The sky's the limit! :p

There's no chance I'm leaving a tip for horrible service. make the beast with two backs that. I will tip in relation to the service. I'm not rude about it, if it's busy I understand or if it's not the server's fault then I don't hold that against them. If it is their fault, if they do something just to spite me or they just totally ignore me when there is the place is nearly empty don't expect much, if anything, for a tip.

Not too bad... I'm pretty much kicking schools ass getting all A's

After my 3 years on the west coast I am SOOOO much calmer now.  Everyone here is so tense and agro all the time  [bang]

Howie

Before skimping on the tip, make sure the bad service is the fault of the server, not the establishment.  Rudeness is the server.  Cold food, slow service, etc may not be their fault.  If you choose not to tip, inform the server why you made this decision.

on topic.
i tip very well. i even tip cash whenever possible. i have been reprimanded by friends and family for tipping 50% on a regular basis.

i don't want to sound like a prick, but it will sound kind of that way so oh well, here it goes.
i go to a restaurant because i don't want to do anything for my food, otherwise i woudl cook at home. i go there to be served. that being said, idon't mind having to hop up and grab a bottle of ketchup or a fork or napkin. however, if i don't see the waiter/waitress for 10 min i get agitated. if i need a refill on my drink and they don't show up or simply walk by without a glance as i am waving to them that upsets me. all you have to do is look over and say "i'llbe right there." you don't even have to smile or try to act polite. just acknowledge that i need something. when they don't do that then the tip disappears faster than a cupcake in front of rosie o'donnel. and i always let them know why the tip isn't there. most of the time there i leave something. i usually don't go below 10%. it's also usually pretty easy to tell if it's the server or the situation that is causing slow or bad service (i.e. if it's really busy or if you see the kitchen staff goofing off and not cooking)
however, anyone who tells me that i have to tip needs to share whatever they are smoking. it's a voluntary thing to recognize good service, not a mandatory thing to help someone who chose a shitty job.
think about it this way. if you don't do your job well, do you get rewarded or do you get in trouble?
