i run on coffee my ducati runs on petrol. HOW SOFT

« on: November 19, 2009, 11:17:47 PM »

had to do some city riding today about 100kms (total not my normal 7-10kms)
at one stage the engine was starting to get real bloody hot on my thigh so hit the button from the time and it went to 157 degrees
i know it was hot in syd today but is that too high?
i stopped to grab some water and let it sit for 15 min went back down to 130 so on my way again
by the time i got home it was at 161
question is: does these high temps do anything to the performance as i did notice it was a little sluggish but maybe it was me wanting to be out of the heat

thanks

the only thing is performance as the air temp gets higher the less oxygen count that gets into the engine less oxygen  less compression but these bikes are made too take that temperature  waytogo

My bike got up to 130 once riding in the city so I did some searching for info and I seem to remember that using fully synthetic oil you can go up to 170 degrees before compromising the oil but I must admit my bike doesn't like being that hot & neither do I! and I did change the oil after that just to be on the safe side.

I've ridden my bike in 45C weather for extended periods and it doesn't feel 'fresh', but it did keep going. I was in constant motion though. I've heard of 1 guy who was stuck n traffic in Sydney on a roasting day and his bike kept seizing. Not sure why that would be, but if our bikes weren't just a little temperemental then they would lack 'character'.  Wink

I don't know all that much mechanically, but have noticed that mine runs cooler since the Termis, chip, hi performance air filter and tune were done. Oh and runs better and doesn't surge and backfire. Yeah baby!!!!!! [moto]

what?? you got rid of the backfiring ? gotta love those random bangs!

besides, when the weather gets too hot, the air-conditioned car is definitely the better place to be

The back firing was probably the least of my problems, but the surging was a bit ordinary. Quite a few times making slow turns it would just surge with acceleration. Don't get me wrong, acceleration is good, but not when it catches you unaware and you find yourself heading a bit too quickly towards an object you don't want to crash into. Probably happened about five or six times. Has not happened since the Termis went on. I loooooooovvve my Termis!!! bow down
I managed (not on purpose) to haul quite a gathering of dads at my son's school this morning, once I started the bike. Comments such as "ooh what a great sound, awesome like a V8".  Grin  Classic!!!! laughingdp

i didn't think about the oil luck its going for service in Jan full oil change, new front tyre, timing belts and whatever else flywheels will throw at it
it was spattering about a wee bit but don't know if i was losing concentration in the heat or not first anything under 40kph and I'm playing musical instruments with the clutch way too much so might have been me

Good point about the riders' performance turning to shite in the heat!! Wear no gear (Read "Stupid") and all the moisture in the body evaporates into the atmosphere and human performance/concentration deteriorates quickly.  Roll Eyes

At least by having gear on the material gets damp from the sweat and helps cool with the air flowing over it! (Evaporative air con?)  waytogo

And dont forget the numb nuts in the cars this time of year with the windows up, air con engaged (Brain NOT!!) music, phone, GPS blah, blah blah!! So you REALLY need to be on the ball! [moto]

Id a riding course the other week when it was 43. Full leathers. Standing on thebitumen getting instruction before practical. The bike was warm but fark I nearly died. No fan blowin on me like the duke. Not too hot just bluddy stoopid. Good course though at worth the discomfort. For some reason wife didn't want a bar of me until I showered. Something like smelling like a cabdriver after a 14 hour shift.

Hey signora monster. I agree on the termis. U got your baffles in or out? Out is so loud and soundz unreal. If the god of thunder had an orgasm it would probably sound similiar!!  Evil

Baffles are in (unless my naughty husband has fixed it without telling me Huh?). Still sounds pretty good though. I don't want to lose the little bit of hearing I have left.  Tongue

BF - How did you get your bike temps that high? 160 degrees? Is that a C or F reading?

I've had my S4R get up to 107c sitting in the CBD moving maybe 100m in 30 minutes. I thought it performed quite well, one reason i went for a water cooled vs air cooled!

The MV used to heat up like a bastard in traffic. I hit 112c and the dash was going bananas at me. At 120c the bike completely shuts off for safety but luckily i got moving before that happened.

My brother in law took a TL1000S for a burn (Parra Action Motorcycles) in mid 30's weather 2 weekends ago and after 5 minutes it was overheating and came back dripping oil. Nice! A good reason to test ride a used bike in the worst conditions (ie midday in Summer). If a bike is going to shit itself, it'll do it in that kind of weather.

He bought a VTR1000 a week later which performed brilliantly in the midday heat. My old VTR1000 was the same, it always soldiered on in the heat and the bike never got to hot to sit on unlike other bikes.
