The easiest way to tell the difference between a 2000/2001 FI tank and a 2002/200x FI tank is by the fuel lines coming out of the bottom. Specifically the 2002/200x tanks have 4 lines coming out of the bottom, but only 2 are bent at 90 degrees (the smaller 1/4" or 6.35mm ones) are bent at 90 degrees and 2 the larger (5/16" or 8mm) ones point straight out of the bottom towards the ground when on the bike.

according to this statement, i would then assume that this tank pictured would be from a 2002+

this is the tank itself:

hinge complications to what? the 01 s4 used the 2002+ MY tank. I am trying to make sure the tank, is in deed compatible with post 2002 bikes. But you are correct, if it were another 01 bike it would have minor issues to sort out to get it to work

The pic of the underside of the tank reveals that it does have the larger 'void' for the vertical head of a 4V so it would work for you.

The only changes in the hinge of a  Monster tank is when they put the plastic tanks on the Monsters.  And, if you get the right tank hinge bracket, you can make either tank work on either frame.
