I had that same ford van (non-extended) back in 1975, I bought it new with the inline 300 cubic inch 6, and three on the tree

Turbocharged 4-cylinder aircooled.  (about Subaru WRX engines aren't hard to swap anymore)

Most big rigs were set up for that. This is something that has basically been lengthened quite a bit, with considerable weight added, with the intent of adding even more.

They are usually just over 400 cu in for a truck that hauls 40,000 lbs.  300 cu in for a van that weighs around 6000 lbs isn't bad.  The 300 cu in Ford is a great truck engine.

Again, it's Diesel Vs. Gas, and from my understanding, a lot of the big rigs are also turbocharged. These are not similar, and that van is still a pig.

Actually there are several different points here that you are addressing.

1.  A straight six is not a desirable platform for a truck engine.  Actually, it is the ideal engine for a truck, whether gas or diesel powered.

2.  A 300 cu in engine is not sufficient for a ~6000 lb van.  It is fine.  The gas engine has higher HP and slightly lower torque compared to an equivalent NA diesel of the same displacement.

3.  A 400 cu in turbo diesel is going to have more pulling power than a 300 cu in NA gas engine.  True, but the power to weight ratio will be higher for the 6000 lb van than the 40,000 lb semi.

4.  The vehicle in question is a pig.  Undeniable.
