Sorry for the threadjack here, but maybe one of you socal folks could enlighten a furriner about what, exactly, is the deal with "the snake"?

On the SF board there's a little thread about why so many crashes happen at this one corner, seemingly all day long, at least frequently enough that there are guys with video cams waiting and a buttload of footage on youtube.

So what's the deal with that corner? Is it off camber? Bad surface? What gives?

The Snake is a stretch of Mulholland between the world famous Rock Store (google it..) at the bottom and Kanan Rd. at the top.
I believe the corner you speak of is the last one at the top of the snake. It's a 180 degree hairpin that's wide and is right below a large turnout, affectionately known as "Squid Point".

On weekends there is a photog there who takes pictures and posts them on his website.

I think that maybe some of the crashes are due to some riders wanting to "look good" for the camera, get in over their head, freak out,  and eat it.

The first time I touched knee to ground was in that corner.  I thought I was in second, realized I was in third, "oh shit" moment.  Luckily, I was already off the seat and somehow managed to not grab a handful of brake.  ...and yes, I bought the picture!  Grin  cheeky

I find it disturbing that you're imagining me in a sauna, never mind the teletubbie aspect of it

Although I wrote this awhile ago, here's a taste of the snake idiocy.

Hahaha. That's classic - a double dipper!

I think the presence of a camera almost guarantees a shift to a little-head riding style. I know I've succumbed myself at track days when I see that guy in the infield with a long lens. It's sad, really.f  I like to think that I've grown beyond that, but I can see where it might be a big contributor to all those crashes.

I had my first photo taken on the Snake a few weeks ago.  I knew the guy was going to be there and I just ignored him and cruised through the corner.  Foremost on my mind was the the only time I had an "off" during my previous riding life.   A friend and I went up to Palos Verdes, to a residential area under construction that had some nice turns in the streets, and slopes all around so that the only background was blue sky.  On my first pass, I threw it over too quickly, hit the center stand tang and high-sided.  My GPz750 was all of three weeks old.  Sadest part was that my buddy wasnt ready and didnt get a shot.
