Short clutch grab and jerkiness in 1st gear

So I just bought a 1994 M900. I love the bike so much and am only the second owner. It is in literally perfect condition, always garage kept, and serviced as well. The only thing I'm not sure about is starting off in 1st gear. I am used to my other two Ducati's, 620 MTS and 748s. Both are very smooth starting and it is obvious when the clutch begins to grab for both bikes. The M900 either begins to grab and starts jerking until speed increases, with light throttle, or if more throttle is given the clutch grabs immediately and lurches the bike back. There doesn't seem to be a way to slowly "ride" the clutch in a smooth fashion. I'm not sure whether this is normal for an older bike or, hopefully, if something isn't right, it is at least an easy fix?  ???

Thanks!

Well, when in doubt, the 1st place to start is by bleeding the clutch. Sounds like it might have some air in the lines, so the clutch doesn't 100% disengage.
-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.

I find that 1st gear on my bike (900ie) is really tall and found that starts were difficult.  In traffic the frequent starts were a PITA.  I ended up dropping a tooth in the front sprocket and gaining two in the back, and that has helped immensely.  Top speed is reduced, and at 80mph the engine is buzzing somewhat, but I don't need to be going that fast anyway.   [leo]

I'll take that to consideration also! Top speed isn't something I need either, I just would rather have a smooth start through 1st gear when I'm commuting in traffic!   [moto] thanks!
