S2R Valve Seal Replacement

So while doing my valve adjustment, the valve seal on the horizontal exhaust side got damaged.  I have replacement seals but the original seal doesn't want to come off.  Can they be removed without removing the head?  The bike is an S2R 800.  Thanks.

Are you referring to the green rubber seal that sits above the valve guide? If so, those things get brittle over time and take some encouragement to remove and probably will come out in pieces.

It should come off pretty easy, and that is one of the easier locations to get to.  I helped a friend replace the seal on the vertical exhaust...that was a pregnant dog to get to new one on due to location.  Get the old one off in peices if you have to, just have to get creative about how to pry/grab it.  I think I mostly used a small pair of curved needle nose plyers.

Yup...those are the ones I'm referring to.  So they can be replaced without head removal?  That's what I thought, just didn't want to over force anything.  Thanks.

Yeah it was!  But it solved the problem immediately.  Whoodathunk that such a little nick could cause so much smoke. 

Tip:  Buy a few of those suckers when you go to the parts counter.  They're only a few bucks.  And you will most likely tear one in the process of trying to get it seated properly.  AMHIK

I think in the end, we oiled one up (to keep it from cracking/ripping) and turned it mostly inside-out.  Then we slipped it over the valve and got it to flip outside-out, over the valve guide.  You got little fingers?

As I am looking at the seal, it is currently seated in a metal cup-type thing, I am assuming the guide.  Almost seems like there is an inner and outer metal ring around the valve and it sits inbetween them.  But the base of the seal I got from my dealer looks to be much larger than this guide.  Another note, the existing seal looks to be 1/4" tall and the new seal looks about 1/8" tall.  Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am trying to get by bike back up and running tomorrow.  Thanks.

Unfortunately, I am not with the bike right now.  I'll try to get one but would appreciate any guidance without it.

The 2005 & 2006 motors ran 8mm valve stems so the seals are (of course 8mm).  When the 2007 motors came out, they are running 7mm valves and seals.  Be sure you have the correct part.

8mm seals come off pretty easy, but the 7mm ones are a bit trickier.  Removing the rocker pins and rocker-arms will help w/access on a 7mm valve'd 800.

Soooooo...looks like there's a whole 'nother can of worms with Ducati's parts system!!!  They list the same part for valve seals for a 2005 and 2007 S2R!!! CRAP!!!  Where is the correct part#?  Anyone?  Even the dealer told me this was the correct part for my bike!!!  It is listed for ALL the new bikes!!!  Even the 1198 uses the same valve seal!!!  How can a dealer sell me the incorrect part after asking for all of my bike's info?  Unreal.  Well, I guess I'll be getting the correct part tomorrow and probably solve this valve seal mystery.  Thanks all.

Yes, the '05 and '07 S2R800 parts catalogues do list the same valve stem seals.
And yes, that's wrong.

S2R1000 has 7mm valve stems, like the '07 S2R800.

Catalogue shows part# 76410021A for the valve stem seal for the S2R1000.

That *should* work.
