Correct me if I'm wrong, but, are track bikes supposed to have lights?

Or no VINs to save weight?

Shouldn't have let him roam free like that. Being in the turkey business you should know how they tend to wander. Especially toward rural two lane roads in broad daylight and tend to make tactical errors regarding on-coming traffic of the two wheeled kind. Just tragic to hear of your loss though. no, the issue here is the seller claims the VIN was removed. 

removing a VIN is a federal and state crime.

it's illegal period to remove a vin unless you are a manufacturer.  if the shop did it, then they are at fault, but no matter what, it just stinks to heaven.
