I had a lot of experience with UPS rates when I was in sales for DHL.  Their pricing was very sporadic for businesses.  Many small businesses had great pricing because of business affiliations, or they had threatened to switch to us or FedEx.  

I'm not sure of specific breakdowns, but I know we were encouraged to go after heavy overnight shippers- printing companies, title and mortgage companies, and attorneys.  We could care less about heavy or oversized ground shipments.

If you pay $5 for an overnight letter, you're doing alright.  They don't have specific volume pricing tables per se- most of the good rates have been negotiated.

That is about right.

Our volume is pretty large and it is based on what exactly you are shipping, weight, frequency, etc.

Let's just say that a UPS semi comes daily to our local mfg facility (we have several) to pick up product.

We would go in, ask to see a FedEx/UPS invoice to verify "volumes and destinations", then knock a few bucks off longer zone shipments, and maybe a letter, for examples to the customer.  Then write them down and match them up to some generic pricing tables back at the office....boom, there's your "volume discount". 

Shocking how we always ended up being slightly less than the competition.  I never had a customer call me on it.
