Asking price under $5k?

That's not that far of a stretch for a 600, including factory rebates, etc.

The local honda dealer will try to sell you a 1000 for less money than a 600 (regardless of what you are there to look at or riding experience) because they need to move product. I am going to guess that something similar is going on here.

i think, at this point, its more about moving product than making profit. both at the dealer and manufacturer levels.

notice the little carrot ^ next to the price?
here's the fine print:
" *Price, if shown, does not include government fees, taxes, dealer vehicle freight/preparation, dealer document preparation charges or any finance charges (if applicable). Final actual sales price will vary depending on options or accessories selected."

When I was selling bikes I learned a lot about the industry. Yessirreebob.
Taxes and government fees (title/tags etc) are non-negotiable.
No matter what the sales guy says, "freight prep" "document prep" "shipping charges" whathaveyou are All negotiable. Those are made-up charges.
Sure, they have to pay insurance on each bike to sit in their showroom, and yeah, they prolly did have to pay some kind of shipping/crating charge... but not $600 (and up) per bike.  (I knew a place that ended up tacking on around $1000/bike for "shipping & handling" fees!)

One of the big places they get you is in finance. If you are financing a bike, be careful!
Pay close attention to the numbers because a good finance guy will have your head spinning.
It's much better to get a loan from a bank and walk in with money than to finance at a dealer.

I've always wondered if I 'ordered' a bike, rather than getting one from the showroom floor, if I could bypass "setup" charges all together. Thankyouverymuch, I can put it together just fine. I am quite aware the answer to that question would be "no" however.

About 6 thousand for a new Japanese 600 that has been sitting on the sales floor for years sounds about right in this economy.  It's a new world order as far as motorcycle values.  Imagine how much this bike would be worth after it's been owned for a a few hundred miles.  You could probably pick it up with some warranty left and a few hundred miles for $3500-$4000.  Suzuki and one of the other Japanese bike makers are not even bringing bikes to the U.S. for 2010 because their dealers need to get rid of the 2006-2009 bikes sitting on the floor.
