I have no idea how this happened.

I'm changing the handlebar tonight (a 4 hour project because the Rizoma bar didn't fit the 695 triple with aftermarket suspension bits sticking up bang head bang head bang head)

So, I drop a bolt, get down to pick it up, and notice a broken socket just hanging down.  After a quick look at my parts manual, I deduce that my Lambda sensor got broken.

Couple of quick questions...

1 - is this a part a Ducati shop will likely have in stock?
2 - Can I replace this myself, or does someone need to play with the computer?
3 - any special tools needed?

Are you sure it aint disconnected? the sensor itself is located  inside the header pipe. Follow the sensor up, it might have just been disconnected when you went down.

Are you sure it aint disconnected? the sensor itself is located  inside the header pipe. Follow the sensor up, it might have just been disconnected when you went down.

Nope, there's a little socket looking thing with a broken ceramic piece with a wire running through it hanging down right next to the side-stand.

It's broken.  Snapped right off somehow.... Lips Sealed

OK - so I called my local shop, and sure enough, this little spark plug sized thing is $240US...   bang head bang head bang head!!!

From my parts catalog, I'm pretty sure I want part number 552.1.111.1A.

Do I have any other choices here?

Anyone!!!?Huh?!!!!

pic? Maybe its repairable. Im sure this is just a generic part. TOB had a list of generic items you can buy from napa or autozone, but the site isnt working for me right now so i cant check. You can try bringing it to autozone/napa/pep boys  and see if they have a replacement.

Yeah, after I posted the above note, K, I went on line and found an after market replacement by NGK.  Now I need to find a US seller.  Tons in the UK Undecided

Autozone is an NGK dealer, plus you can try some generic motorcycle stores. There is  a shop in the city that carries a lot of parts. Try Camrod Motorsport

Talking to NGK, they don't support the US aftermarket for that part, but they do sell it to Magneti Marelli.  Their part number is CA 00834 76A.  I'm pretty sure that's the OEM part.

Tommy, I came up dry too.  NGK aftermarket sensors are branded NTK, no idea if the part numbers match up.  Your best bet is to go to an auto parts store that deals with professional shops, sensor in hand so they can match it.  Maybe these guys:

31 Cooper Sq., Noho

You may need to change the connector.

Meanwhile, unless exhaust is leaking through the sensor, the bike should run in open loop.  How well depends on base settings.  The only way you will know is to try it.

The bike ran OK when I got it out of the garage.  Engine light never went off - just figured it was the computer remembering the engine last ran over a month ago.

Not going to tempt my luck tonight, though. Tongue

Try unplugging the battery and leavin the key in the ON position for a while so the data gets cleared. Also, try motored sports. A lot of people just pull the plug and leave it in. You shouldnt have to pay alot of $ for it. Its like buying a beer tray. :/

Understood you don't want to risk going to Joisy.  The check engine light is on due to improper output or no from the 02 sensor and is now running on a default map.  If it is running way lean you will know it.  If it is running rich you risk damaging the cats with prolonged if you still have factory exhaust.  Disconnecting the battery and clearing the memory may or may not turn the light off permanently depending on generation of computer.  Ride it locally for a while and see how it runs.  He Man has a point about getting a used sensor.  Post up in parts wanted.

I tried the battery disconnect / on off on off on off on off trick.

My bike said, "I'm not stupid, I know what you're trying to do." and ran like a cranky old man.  No closed loop for me Undecided.

I ordered a direct fit replacement from justlambda.com based out of England.  Just over 70GBP.  WAY better than the Ducati price waytogo

I'm pretty sure this is the OE sensor.  According to NGK here in the US, they sell this sensor to Magneti Marelli for OE applications.

I bought the NGK / NTK sensor listed in the catalog as a direct fit for ALL DUCATI motorcycles.  The mfr. part number is OZA591-BB3.  When I get to my desk I'll edit this post for searching including all the other part numbers.
