Another stripped thread. Fatal?

After the slight annoyance of the thread in my carbs, I'm now confronted with a far more problematic strip. It would seem the previous owner of my M600 had a thing about overtightening.

After about a day of fighting it, with release agents and socket spanners, i managed to remove the bolt that allows me to drain my oil sump, for the first oil change I've done on this bike. Lo and behold, the effing thread that should have been on the engine block remained on the bolt. Now as far as i can tell, I'm narked, this cannot be bodged. I realise that if i did 'make do' with this, if it didnt work, I'd need a new engine before i realised.

Will helicoils do the job? If not, would it be safe to rethread the block? its just a solid bolt, not a banjo.

I thought of putting rubber or some form of tape around the bolt, but i dont want to risk it not working and loosing my oil on the move.

Forgive the rambling, but I'm seriously concerned about this one. XVIII

I'd consider re-threading if you can find a plug one size larger. The gasket surface isn't that big and you'd need to preserve as much as possible.

An insert would be better. Helicoils can back out when you remove the plug the next time. A better method of repair is a time-sert or keen-sert.

google them.

I'm going to have a metalwork savvy friend of mine rethread it. I don't want to have to wat for anything to be delivered, rather paranoid about stuff getting in the sump.

anything, dust, insects etc. It's all covered up but I'm paranoid about something getting in and causing me problems once its all fixed. Very likely its unfounded.

I'd say it was.

Have you found a replacement plug?

Said friend is going to have a look and just make the hole/thread one M size larger than it is now. So the bolt should still be a standard size.

cduarte

make sure that he puts grease on the tap as that will help catch any shavings created by opening the hole up.

Try to find one with a magnet.

It can help diagnose developing issues.
