Uh-oh ... what's going on here?

Early Desmosedici??   Evil

Technically I don't think the Apollo was either a Desmo or a sedici ... and I am not trying to be a smart arse but I did get a laugh out of the suggestion that the predecessor for the Desmosedic MotoGP bike was designed as a competitor to Harley.

I think I know what you meant though and it would have been interesting if it had gone into production ... Ducati may be a completely different company now ... or they may have ceased to exist many moons ago.

Beautiful. Hadn't seen one until my visit to the museum.

I saw this one first in Pisa and thought WOW, that's different in an awesomely cool way. But when I later went to the museum I had one of those 'ohh I get it now' kinda moments.

I think you missed the  Evil in my comment?

The Apollo engine had nothing to do with the 'sedici design at all, the Apollo was pushrod (!) and a 2v setup, and a POS from all acounts....

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the air—these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

According to the article in Motorcycle Classics, "the inability to source tires capable of harnessing such a big-engined and heavy bike deprived 1960s bikers of the thrills of riding the first of the next generation of 4-cylinder sport bikes."  It could have been a success and it would have made Ducati a different company for better or worse.  I like seeing points like that in history.

"one half of the engine would, and did, provide a superb basis for a range of 90-degree V-twin models. Five years after the Apollo project’s demise, Taglioni proved the worth of that assertion when he designed Ducati’s first OHC 750 V-twin, closely inspired by the Apollo’s architecture."

#1 for both comments.

That SS makes me want one (though, I wanted one before I saw this bike).
