jockey - ignore the usual "you need to learn how to ride" comment on the other post. some guys just can't help telling others that complaining their bike is slow simply means they can't ride. i'm an engine guy myself, and just love playing with things to make them go better. it's kind of addictive. and i did a 750 project because it seemed to me that it was a pretty easy target, sort of like a harley. and i had access to enough bits to do it fairly cheaply. mine goes very, very well for a 750, and is a lovely engine to use.
That was me... and to be honst, I am an engine guy too (granted it's the much different world of muscle cars). I'm all for more power, but just going from what he had wrote, well, it seemed like thats all he wanted to do. Go fast in a straight line. Same kind of thing I'd hear from the local squid club, which always ends up in talks about extended swing arms and lowering kits.
Regardless, here's my two cents. Jockey, do you have experience doing engine work? A decent set of tools? A decent place to work? None of these are a must, but they sure help a lot. Having tools will save you countless dollars in labor time, and the experience will get you through the trickey process of running the valves. A place to work will tie it together. I've done the maintenance in the parking lot thing, and it sucks.

I own a '97 M750.
I have installed:
Ferracci Forged 11:1 pistons
Heads completely polished, ported, unobtainium valve seats, Colletts in valve train, port matched
Full exhaust, custom headers, Ferracci high rise carbon cans
39mm Keihin FCR flatslide carbs
Pod filters, no airbox
Big plug wires
All emissions controls removed
chain and sprockets
Motul 300v full synthetic 15-50 oil
I have $6,000 in the engine alone.
What did I get?
70hp at the rear wheel on a chassis dyno.
Buy a 900.
Cheers.
P.S.
Awesome freakin throttle response and zings to redline!

thats an animal i dont want to deal with. Sand in a downhill S turn. make the beast with two backs that. You better hope your tire doesnt kick out too much.

Plus a set of FCR carbs for about $939 and you have one of the baddest air-cooled Monsters to ever roam the earth.
