He tests Suzuki chain orings (new ones) with exposures to various fluids people use to clean chains.

WD40, gas, kerosene, chain lube, carb cleaner, brake fluid, etc etc

It's a very good exposure test design.

But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Great post Ducatiz.

I clean my chains overnight in ATF.  I suspect it is pretty benign to seals and orings, but I've never tested it like you.

Gosh, good thing my DCOEs have fiber gaskets!

ITS NOT MY TEST!  I just found it while lurking on advrider.

I'd like to see one on the effects on grease, but that might be much harder to do for a home-tester.  It certainly puts to rest the criticisms about WD40, but I was shocked to see the effect on them by kerosene.  Carb cleaner and gas, hell yeah, but I thought kerosene would be more benign.  I wish he'd tested diesel too that's another fav.

Great find. Thanks for sharing 'tiz.  I need to lurk more on ADV. Obviously keep that carb clean the hell away from your orings... jebus.

Awesome! Glad I use WD-40 for my chain cleaning...

check out bean clean.

its biodegradable,  dissolves in water, smells like hamburgers if you forget to wash it off, and is safe for rubbers such as o rings.

Specifically designed to clean moto chains that use orings, but good for many other things.

isn't WD40 mostly kerosene?
and which is better, orings swelling or shrinking?

I thought kerosene would be more benign.

The change is size was only 0.001" on cross section dia and 0.005" on the OD.  I would say that's a negligible change.

duh..

i misread the chart in my haste and saw the gasoline numbers..

kerosene looks just fine.

I still wonder about the long terms effects of using WD40 as a cleaner and lube.  And about how using WD40 as a cleaner followed by Chain Wax affects the ability of the chain wax to stick.   I also wonder why Faceman had such a stupid paintjob on his Corvette while the kinda-similar A-Team van paintjob rocked my world.

Interesting 'lil study.  Thanks for posting.

Great posting!!!  I am a WD-40 user just to clean the chain.  I use an o-ring safe chain lubricant for lubing it.  Chains last a long time for me.
