Was looking for an autodark helmet until i found this little thingy!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320479669445&rvr_id=&crlp=1_263602_263622&UA=%3F*F%3F&GUID=4a43e1701260a02652c06a20ff419b3d&itemid=320479669445&ff4=263602_263622

Chin operated to open to clear lens and also stay open with a flip.

I like it much better than autodark for the simple fact that im a bit oldschool and do not trust my eyes to technology over mechanical parts.

You're too young to be 'old school'. ;D

My experience is if you use a manual helmet you'll get more flash than with an auto dark.

YMMV

Ive used both and as much as I hate to say it, I agree with Nate.  A good quality auto dark is teh shit.

I thought the same thing watching the video.

I'm intrigued though, because I'm still ISO a helmet I really like. I've got a pretty good manual helmet, but these days tend to grab the cheap-o autodark because I've gotten addicted to the convenience of it. The thing I don't like about it is that I don't get as good a look at the weld as I'd like -- even at a low setting, I think it's too dark to see anything but the arc clearly, so I don't have as much control over the pool & bead as I'd like.

Anyone have a recommendation for a reasonably priced auto dark helmet? Otherwise, this might be worth exploring...

When i take a shit, its like a mini gamma ray burst. You need to shut off all electronics within the nearby area.

Ive heard of the autodark featuere not working for low light conditions, or its kinda glitchy for TIG welding or welding in the cold. Both of which im doing right now....well the TIG welding is more of me make the beast with two backsing up metal more than anything. :P
