Chopping/Modifying stock footrests???
«

Has anyone ever modified a stock rearset/footrest from earlier generation monsters?? I've got a 2000 Monster with highmount pipes, and I was looking at chopping off the entire rear portion of the passenger footrest to "expose" more of the bike. I don't need it and I would like to remove as much clutter as possible on the bike. It's a budget mod for me as I can't afford aftermarket rearsets at the moment.
Would chopping them weaken the strength? Anyone with pics and info that they could chime in with would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have any pix, but I have seen someone do what youre talking about. They Chopped two sides off the rear spar triangle. That section that would support the stock exhaust, and support the passenger pegs.
As long as you only cut out that rear section, I wouldn't think it would weaken the rest.

If no one has a picture, use some painters tape for the area you want to cut off and take a picture. Or take a picture and photoshop.

I really want to do that mod but that`s where I rest my inside heel when I`m turning at speed.
It looks great.

oh finally a picture of someone that has done it, THANK YOU!!!! I was thinking of minimizing more material and chopping them closer to the vertical supports and right above the riders footpeg. I'm just not sure if that will make it too weak and not support a riders weight??

if you cut off that upper part, it'll only be attached at the bottom. I don't imagine that would be good.
you could always mod to fit the S*R sets... I've seen them on DSS monsters
:edit: wait, unless you mean taking off the rear portion (exhaust mount) still leaving all four of the bolting points... that should still work

Yes all four bolting points would still be in place. I was thinking of removing the rear portion like mentioned which the exhaust mounts to.
As for the S*R sets do they just bolt on in the same location as my DSS?? I didnt think they were a straight bolt on.

ah...
not a straight bolt on, you need to use the SSS pivots, as well. otherwise, iirc they'll go right on

Excuse my lack of knowledge on this stuff. If I source a complete set with pedals, they should bolt right on?? What are the "pivots" you talk of?

the... axle? for lack of a better term, that joins the swingarm to the engine. it's a different part for the DSS and SSS bikes.
