Long Beach Social Experiment
«
on:
February 09, 2010, 01:27:14 PM »
Hello Everyone, so this is directed to those in the long beach area willing to help me
out with a quick experiment. I am currently taking a women's sociology
class and we are required to go out in public and break a gender role
and write a paper on the responses we get.
So I was thinking, as a guy, an interesting gender role to break would
be where I am the passenger to a girl on a bike rather than other way
around. Not too hard or complicated but definitely something i expect will
get people's attention.
So my question is: is there a female rider willing to help out with
this experiment or maybe a guy rider that is willing to dress as a
girl (pink helmet/jacket maybe a wig) with me as a passenger and do a
quick lap around campus-csulb? If so let me know. Thanks!

Why does it have to look like a girl in front. Any guy in the passenger role attracts just as much attention regardless of the rider in front.

although a guy on the back of a bike with another guy does get people's attention, i'm going for a gender role reversal. think of it like this..
if there is a guy and a girl (and the both know how to ride) and they were to decide to take one bike.. the "obvious" thing to do according to the social gender norm would be for the guy to pilot the bike and the female to ride as the passenger. on the other hand, if it was two guys, sure they might feel uncomfortable and sure people might find it funny/odd but I don't feel this would really be as direct as the girl rider situation in breaking a gender norm..

I applaud your experiment. I wonder if there would be much effect on a college campus when people aren't paying much attention, funds are tight and smart transportation is valued. I do, however, think that if they pulled up at the Rockstore on a Sat/Sun morning, people would take notice. There are some pretty strict norms among motorcyclists.

I was planning on doing this in an area where students typically wait for the bus or to be picked up--lots of people standing around just staring/people-watching--but your idea sounds even better.. this situation would be weird for the average person to see but moreso for motorcyclists.. I will consider that!
if you guys end up seeing a girl giving a ride to a guy at the rock store.. it's probably me

wouldnt you want a more general gender break, than a specific moto-related break?
Motorcycle crowds are an interesting lot... you may not get the response youre looking for
.... Just a thought

This brings me back to my college Soc days...facing backwards in the elevator, buying all of the bananas at the supermarket, leaving the stall door wide open while using the men's room. Ahhhh, those were the days.

I agree that I could possibly do something else but I wanted to do something moto related.. it's just more fun

lol I have a buddy who was telling me about his experience of doing that for another class--walking into an elevator and not turning around to face the door.. just standing there staring at the back of the elevator. haha classic..

^^ actually a few female students are planning on doing this but we feel that if a male does it, it may result in him getting arrested.. so I think I'm going to pass

Doesn't just taking the damn course count? I mean, you are a dude, right?

i'd totally give you a ride on my bike but i've never had a passenger before... lol. not sure as though i'd be the best pilot for you. but if you're willing to be gentle... hehe
wouldn't it be just as much of a gender role break to ride cupcake with a guy? seeing as how men are supposed to be drivers/pilots only?
If you need any theoretical insight, I'm a gender studies senior... perhaps I can be of some help.
Feel free to PM.

other than my reply to erkishhorde above, I guess another reason is cuz I've personnally given a couple guys rides as well as taken a ride as a passenger (only once when I crashed my bike, of course!
) but the sight of a girl giving a guy a ride, THAT I've NEVER seen and thought it'd be funny to get a shot of that
