G'Day Ducatters  coffee

Now that I'm free of the M1100 exhaust servo, I'm tossing some alternative exhaust options around...... one of which is to simply replace the existing ugly-series-of-welds-of-a-midpipe with a replacement item of more grace and sans the redundant flapper valve.....  Anybody know if there's anything available out there, such as this midpipe option for M696 by Spark? (not that I can find any other info on it...)  >>

I'm aware of the offering by HPE, but its not much (if any) of an aesthetic improvement on the stock item and so too much to pay IMO just to lose the flapper >>

ryanracer has offered to consider producing such an item, but he'd need an AZ resident to pay him a visit with their...um... donor M1100.  Volunteers?

Ofcourse, I could have the stock item cut-n-shut in order to ditch the flapper.... but I'd prefer to keep the stock part intact coz I like collecting crap that I'll never again use  Cool.

Now....... hit me with the force of your collective wisdom  Grin

Thanks.

I've been looking for a replacement pipe also.  I actually kinda like the welded pipe; gives it sorta a mechanical look IMO; but I don't want to drop a lot of money on it like the one from HPE.  Thought about just getting some pipe and welding in a section but matching the color would be difficult.
That's one of the reasons I'm still running with the servo operating.  That, plus the ability to coast through town quietly (I'm running the Termi's without the DB killers).  I'm still undecided about removing it.  Did deactivating it make the bike quite a lot louder at idle?

if the exhaust diamaters b/w 696 and 1100 are the same...why not just order an oem midpipe from a 696 or look for one on ebay?  ive seen a few pass by there in recent months.  might be cheaper than going the hpe route.

the spark piece does look the nicest though...

Alright. Here's my understanding of how this flapper works:  If you're running Termi slip-ons with DP ECU then your flapper valve contributes absolutely NOTHING to the power output (despite what some dealers are telling shoppers, its not there to "improve mid-range response") nor does it in anyway contribute to the sound output once mobile.  Its my belief - and I'm happy to be corrected here - that the flapper valve operates ONLY in the following circumstances: 1) It chirps closed/open when they key is first turned, merely to ensure that it remains functional - i.e. doesnt seize from lack of use.  2) At 3000rpm and in NEUTRAL ONLY (and here's the only time it functions to quieten things a little)  the servo engages the flapper.   I'm told that this is coz thats how static noise testing is conducted (presumably in some European jurisdictions)  - 3000rpm in neutral.  So its there just to "cheat" the regulator's noise test  Evil.  So since it does nothing of any use when you're actually riding the bike, why keep carrying its ugliness everywhere?  I dont know if any of the above is applicable to bikes running the stock ECU.

I'm running Termi slip-ons without the Db killers too - for fun I manually operated the flapper and using only my ears, since thats the only sound detection equipment I have access to, I could hear no difference in noise output with it wide open or held flapped closed.

Yup.  If 696 and 1100 are interchangeable, then that could offer an opportunity.  I have my friendly research team checking on this for me in the near future, so thanks to them for their efforts (you know who you are  Wink)

I'm running the Termis with the DP ecu also.  So what you are saying is the DP ecu no longer causes the servo to move the flapper?

Please let us know if that 696 mid pipe works out. popcorn

I'm saying that - to the best of my knowledge - when fitted with DP ECU the flapper flaps only in the two circumstances that I outlined above.  I have no idea if it flapped any more or less frequently when running the stock ECU.

I'm saying that the flapper does bugger all useful IMO.

I've had both bikes also and if my memory serves me I recall the 1100 being a larger diameter. I played around with the valve on my bike which resulted in the service engine light coming on if you adjusted it any differently than it came from the factory.

If anyone does want a 696 midpipe for a future project, I have mine just sitting in the garage... I will part with it once I receive my new exhaust/mid-pipe from ryanracer and H-Competition which should hopefully be soon

for you 1100 owners, measured them side by side today and pretty certain they match up. so the 696 midpipe should work on the 1100. BUT... i'm working on a 2 into 2 midpipe as well, and since i know the 696 and 1100 are the same, it should work on the 696 and 1100 Cheesy
