What side of closer shim half rings goes up?

Thought I read somewhere that if you can see a slightly flattened side to the half rings/collets on the closer shims than you should put that flattened side down or up.  Anybody know?  To me it would seem to not make a difference, but I could have sworn I read it somewhere and I cannot find it now.  Oh by the way, doing a valve adjustment is SOOO FUN!  [bang]  [bang]

Actually, I am kind of looking forward to the next time I have to do one so that I can NOT repeat some of the stupid mistakes I've made.  [bang]  [bang]

Pounded side up, which should have an indented line along the top.  If you put them in upside down they will function, but your clearance will be off since they now fit differently and as they pound in the clearance will change.

As long as you put them in the same way they were before you took them out you should be fine.  The key is to not flip them from one change to the next.  I can't wait to do my valves but I think I am going to take it to a mechanic for the first one since its still in warranty, but after that I'm gonna at least do them once myself;  too much fun.

Both sides of the half rings will have wear marks. the outer marks in the center of the 1/2 ring is where the 1/2 ring sets on the valve shim. There is another mark more on the inner side from the 1/2 ring groove this side goes up.

I have found it best to have good eyesight/glasses to read them well. If you can tell from 5 feet away it is time for new 1/2 rings.

Imagine the wire of the collet itself going through a clock face...

if the wear "mark" is flattening at 6 or 12 o'clock, that is the BOTTOM.

If the dent is a notch at 10, 2, 5, or 7 -- that's the TOP. Meaning the top's dent is offset a little bit to the inside.
