HELP! Engine doesn't start...

2007 S2R 800 5455kms

My bike has been in a heated garage for the last few months.  I occasionally go and start her up to get the fluids flowing and such.  This time it's been a few weeks since I last started the motor and it won't fire up.  More specifically, when I turn the key to ON position the lights come on and needles sweep like normal.  The headlight comes on and remains bright, the signals work as well as the horn. So I've ruled out the battery.  When I press the started button I hear it prime for a few seconds then nothing.  Repeated it a few times with no luck.   [bang]  Any suggestions?

  Right handlebar kill switch? It does happen. In gear, side stand switch.

@ducpainter: if it was the battery, why do the lights still work? horn, signals, etc...

Because those things don't require anywhere near the battery power the starter does.

When you hit the start button does the headlight go dim?

Or the solenoid click? Small wire on the solenoid used to cause problems on older bikes.

The headlight does not go dim. Actually, I left the key in the ON position for a good 3-5 mins while trying the high beam, turn signals and horn, which all worked.

 Sit on the bike, put the kickstand up, make sure it is in neutral, pull the clutch in and try again. Listen for the solenoid click.

Try checking out where the negative battery cable grounds on the swingarm. Some corrosion there can cause some issues. Put your finger on the bolt connecting the ground cable to the swingarm and try starting the bike. Hope this helps.   [thumbsup]

had the same problem with the 620, its the battery.  Try jumping it with a battery charger/starter. I thought it was the solenoid so i changed it out but still had the same problem.  Got a new batter and it worked fine.
I live vicariously thru myself......

Wish that had worked for me. I got a new battery, a new solenoid, checked the starter = no fix. Finally took 104 miles to Ducpond, and the tech there got it started on the first try. He said the grounds go bad on these bikes a lot. Just loosened the bolt, cleaned off the corrosion and tightened it back up. 10 min job. Good luck
