A Most Magnificent Monster

« on: March 17, 2010, 11:10:09 AM »

Man, what a gorgeous day yesterday!!  I left work a little early (as did everyone else), and decided I needed a ride.  Got home and geared up, then pointed the Duc east along Soledad.  Nice and easy through Canyon Country and topping off my tank at Sand Canyon.  Continued east on Soledad as it opened up beyond the 14.  Carving smooth lines into Acton, then towards the mountains on Aliso Canyon Road.   Hardly another soul on my side of Angeles Forest and dialing up the speed, the pulling over at the picnic area in front of the tunnel.  After a short breather watching the commuter traffic heading back towards Palmdale (quite a few bikes), I rode up to the bridge and stopped again to watch a pair of hawks surfing the air above the gorge.  Turned around at that point and headed back down the mountain, timing my passes of the cagers so I could keep a nice even pace.  Chose the same route back, but turned off Soledad on Agua Dulce Canyon Road, then on to Sierra Highway via Davenport, and home.  82 miles in just over two hours.  Was hoping I might hit 20,000 on my odo, but only had 19987 when I rolled into my garage.

Hmmm...today is looking even nicer...

I was out yesterday as well. Nothing as exciting as your ride, but fun none the less. I got to ride for somewhere around 3 hours, Santa Monica to Zuma and back and then some city riding. Just broke 12k!!  Grin

Supposed to be amazing the whole rest of the week! I think.  chug

Ride safe.

So where did you go and how was it?  The area is my "backyard" and it really has some great roads.  I spent Saturday working on my car and bike...routine maintanance and service.  I did get out on Friday though, litterally crossing paths with Stuart then hangin out with him and Ryan on the Santa Monica Moutain's roads.

Next time you are heading back this way, drop me a line!

I followed Ruben  from the pad out to the freeway. Then up the 5 fwy exiting at Valencia Blvd.... topped off the tanks and headed out Bouquet Cyn... past the reservoir, turned left (unk road).. road thru that twistie... stopped at a lil store/gas station where we found out we were actually pretty close to Willow Springs... Had a good time but I couldn't tell ya what the road names were..

Sounds like you took Spunky Canyon up and over to Green Valley and San Francisquito.  Did you come back via San Fran?  Next time you come over this way, exit the 210 at Osborne, then take Little Tujunga over to where it becomes Sand Canyon.  Other great roads up here are Lake Hughes Road (though the 3-4 miles close to Lake Hughes proper are rough and bumpy, the road out from Castaic is stellar).  From Lake Hughes, take Pine Canyon Road to Three Corners and Sandburg.

Thanks for the compliments!

Just to provide some clarity on ACH - it's open from the Sunland area (the back side), not the La Canada area (the front side).

Me and my buddies went up Angeles Forest Hwy (Foothill & Oro Vista in Sunland) to Upper Big Tujunga (9 mile) then up Angeles Crest (Hwy 2) to Newcombs for some breakfast.

You can make a right on Angels Crest from 9-mile but I presume it will be closed at junction of Angeles Forest.  We rode down that way to scout things out but turned back at Mnt Wilson as the road was very very rocky.
