I'll repeat what others said just so that it's clearly spelled out.

Your monster is air-cooled.  It has no radiator and no coolant, just an oil cooler.  You're seeing the oil temp.  It's running temp should be in the 200s.  It could be lower if it's cold out, but don't worry unless it heads over 300.

Your friends' bikes are water-cooled.  They have radiators with coolant.  They're looking at coolant temp.  It should be below boiling point of water and generally in the high 100 range.

Ah, missed that.  OP has an aircooled bike (750).  lazylightnin717 has a water cooled bike (s4).   So, yes, 230 is your coolant temp and it's too high.

Oh geez. I thought that huge thing with fans was an oil cooler...  Roll Eyes

Seriously though, I would love to learn how to add one like the s4r! I like the way the oil coolers fill the front end

Back to my other question tho-- Anyone know the temp at which the fans should have kicked on? Is the obvious answer "sometime" before HOT started flashing?

I think it is supposed to be between 185-205, from experience with cantankerous cars. If you are getting 220 or more, this is too hot.
