The rise and fall of common courtesy

So I contacted the person that sold me my bike because I had a couple questions for him. For some reason he felt that I had in some way offended him:

Me-
"Hey,
Just wanted to let you know that I've got the forks and front end up for sale. You said you wanted first crack at them if i sold'em.
Also, To get past the immobilizer did you have the ECU reflashed, or some other way?

Thanks,
Aarash"

His response-

"make the beast with two backs off u ignorant asshole."

Me-
"I'm assuming by your response you aren't interested in the forks, nor are you familiar with how the immobilized has been disabled. I hope your recovery is going well.

His response-
"Look jack ass the only reason I respond to your asinine an obnoxious mail is to scream obscenities at u. u stupid make the beast with two backs! do not post any replies to my mail or any other posts, u have displayed yourself as a ignorant ass whole who is beyond stupid and should not be riding a motorcycle or breading. lets hope the last part you don't ever have offspring!  if u get hit by a car it would not b surprising to me, I can only hope.

Now I'm not sure what spurred this anger or hatred. But I feel sorry for him. What bothers me is that more and more I seem to come across people that are unable to get their message across in a clear, courteous manner. I know it's not my generation, because he his 20+ years my senior. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Is this something I should start to expect from people? Should I set my standards for courtesy and respect lower?

I was just kinda frustrated that members of this board can go out of their was to be nasty, there's no reason for that......now that good cheer you have,  is it of the barley/hops variety? if so you can spread it this way

Oh man! I hate that! I've been fighting with a guy for two weeks and juuuuust payed me for the auction. Good luck getting the guy to come through. Push comes to shove you can send out a second chance offer to the next guy

Manners, etiquette, and general rules for societal interactions have been undergoing quite a pounding in the last 40 years and it's had numerous implications. I think maybe as the means and ubiquity of inter-personal communication has exploded, they've grown beyond the rules society naturally adopts when a peoples deal with one another.
