Worst....Fresh install......ever.

Other then that pretty neat, little memory heavy, but neat.

Just wanted to vent about the install though. Carry on.   [coffee]

I wonder why your expierence was so bad at the install - working in IT, I've done many fresh installs as well as upgrades and never run into a problem. Care to elaborate on your issue?

...you've sparked my curiosity.

PhoenixS4R

I had a disk error with windows vista. I had a virus somewhere, couldn't find it. No idea if that provoked the load error or not but I'd imagine so.

Couldn't find the vista disk to save my life, went to best buy, played it safe and bought the full install VS the upgrade in case the computer couldn't recover.  Afterwards I decided to play it save and just reformat my computer.

Upon bootup, my bios recognized the cd-rom drive, allowing the windows install GUI to load properly, yet trying to install it lead to a "Can't find CD/DVD driver" error (Common issue apparently) and halting any progress.  2 hours with the foreign windows tech who couldn't pronounce my name (Michael) ultimately ended up with me rather aggrivated and with no more knowledge other then what I could gather from surfing the net with my Itouch......Create a boot USB and transfer the windows installation files to the usb, effectively eliminating the need for the boot CD at this point.  Wasn't very happy in regards to this, as I didn't not have a USB drive big enough nor the computer to perform the tasks (My work computer has had the administrator rights removed, company policy  [bang])

So, after I finally accomplished this task I installed windows.  Pretty neat operating system, I like it so far, however I couldn't get the OS to recognize my DVD drive.  I looked on the web for drivers, and found out that my particular DVD drive driver is loaded into the windows system......so it's on my disk/floppy.  No luck.  More research lead me to find that there is a registry entry (I'm not computer tech bare with me) about high/low filters and simply deleting them will allow windows to see my drive.

Again, I don't know a lot about computers but I'm usually smart enough to recognize to stay away from the registry, but left with no other options, so I performed the deletion after backing up the registry and amazingly it works now.  [coffee]

Really wasn't that bad, but it just came at a bad time, plus the foreign tech didn't make me happy.

/vent.

Wow, well I can tell you that I do totally see your frustration - hopefully the piece of mind that it's not usually like that will help you feel a bit better now that it's all setup and working!  [thumbsup]

7 definitely is not perfect, but it isn't too bad either.

I have had a desktop  icon problem 2 times now in 7, with 2 different computers.  The icon cache database gets corrupt, so you have to delete it, and then rebuild it by logging out/in.  It is a pain, because explorer is using it, so you have to kill explorer in task mgr, then use cmd windows to do it.  And, it is a protected file, so you have to use modifiers to delete it.

Wow mitt, that's definitely an oddity that I have yet to see. What version of 7 are you running?

First machine was 7 pro, 2nd machine 7 home premium, both clean installs.  I built one in between those 2 with a clean install home premium, and I never saw the problem.

I've worked with both Win 7 Enterprise 32 bit and 64 bit and have yet to have a problem - install was smooth and fast - fastest format of a hard drive I think that I've ever seen. Coming from Vista, I have to admit that I'm thrilled with the changes that were made. Hopefully things will stay this way for a while.  [thumbsup]

Big Troubled Bear

Have been running 7 Ultimate on all 5 my work machines with no problems for 2 weeks, holding thumbs as I never ran Vista and these machines were all on XP service pack 3 before
Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

Monster Dave

I had Vista Business on our office laptops and have since installed Win 7 64bit and frankly, I'm amazed at how much more smoothly and stable they run.

I had massive problems with credential manager in Vista on the laptops getting constantly corrupted.

It happened after the update, but I'm not ready to blame it yet.  The initial reason I had to reinstall windows was due to a crcdisk error. Which caused the same syptoms I have now (windows says it's loading but then just goes black.  My limited research into this error left me with the knowledge that it could be just a windows load error or a faulty hard drive. I wansnt able to try to fix it this morning before work, but I did notice the boot up option afte an improper shut down to load in safe mode was missing?  I would lelike to boot in safe mode as it lists the load up processes which is how I knew it was a crcdisk error.  Any help on this issue?

Forgive any typing errors as I'm writing this on my iPod lol

Monster Dave

It sounds to me like your disk is shot. Fortunately, they are cheap to replace these days.

Holy crap batman!

I restored to a point 2 days ago, windows loaded, then I got a black screen with a cursor.  it sat like that for 20 minutes while I played on my phone and gave up hope, then loaded fully.

wtf? lol NEVER TURNING OFF MY COMPUTER lol.
