Key words in there are "as built"  ;)

interesting, why would USN disarm it?

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Was gonna say...most WARSHIPS put to sea prepared to go to WAR at any time. Wouldn't make much sense for the GUIDED MISSILE frigate to be in marginally friendly waters unarmed for defense...

Just sayin'...

$$$$$
The missile it was designed to use (SM1) was retired, cost too much to upgrade to newer version or to a gun mount.  It never had a "big gun".  The ship's themselves are slowly being retired.  Until then it's counter drug/pirate ops and missile sponge for the carrier battle group.

Guided Missile Frigate that doesn't carry missiles.   ;) But I agree that they go to sea ready to defend themselves.

Well,I wouldn't call the 50mm Vulcan a small gun either. I mean I have watched the 30mm Vulcan on the A-10 cut T62s into scrap iron in seconds...methinks tthe 50mm Vulcan can do similar things to most anything short of a cruiser or carrier...

i mean, what if they got it?  could you imagine?

In all likelihood, they would have never figured out how to do a damn thing with it.  Have you seen the level of complexity that goes into operating a sea-going warship?

The vulcan on this vessel is a CIWS system, which stands for Close In Weapon System.  Basically a last ditch attempt to take down incoming cruise missiles, and it fires 20mm shells.

is a 20mm shell  big?

what sort of building/house/boat would it take out?

It'll get the job done.

building?  most  house?  all  boat? quite a few...  But it's more complicated than that.  Do a quick google for M61 Vulcan.  The main thing with that weapon system is its alarming rate of fire.  They can put out something like 6000 rounds per minute.

we had a small number of them in the lockup for training.  i think IDF was just looking for interesting things to copy.

Sure do.  The older ones used the 20mm version which is basically an M61 with integral tracking radar/systems attached.  Some of the newer platforms have gone to a multi-barreled 25mm bushmaster set up.
