Crazy mishap on a GXR

I know it's not a duc, but this is just nuts.  A buddy of mine races and just got this 03 GXR and was doing the practice runs and the freakin' frame snapped in half at a bad weld!  Watch out!  Suzuki Chopper.

Was the bike rebuilt, or is that a factory weld?  :o

Really... Satellite TV?   [thumbsup]

WetDuc

He said  it was a factory weld that previous Suzukis had to be recalled to address the issues.  His model was supposed to be fine and not susceptible to the weld failure...obviously not.

I haven't seen this on the 03/04 gen GSXR's.
The factory recall was for the 05/06 gens and this recall started last year.
There's a 08 in the shop that looks exactly the same as the picture by the OP and that owner is trying to get Suzuki to cover the bill.

I've heard (but have no proof) there's a class action lawsuit against Suzuki for this exact problem. I have no specifics so what I'm saying is only rumor at best.

There's always the ones that are crashed/stunted that cause this type of damage, but is it really "just happening"? I can't answer that myself.

Ya can only take off but so many pounds before bad things start happening...

WetDuc

I checked facebook (where I got the pictures of the bike from my friend) and I think I got the year of the bike wrong.  Not sure what year it is, but he said the bikes from the previous year had the recall for the frame welds.  Sorry for the confusion, original post has been edited.

I can't wait until Marquez gets on his level and makes Jorge trip on his tampon string.

I've got an '04 1000 and an '05 750 and neither of them are involved in that re-call/inspection. I believe it's in the later models, '05 and up. I think that's what I heard. I don't even know if the 600s and 750s are included, could just be the 1000s. I wish him luck trying to get Suzuki to pony up! [thumbsup]

What happened to the rider?  Not the same as the bike hopefully?  Still in one piece?

He probably needs to clean out his leathers, though. ;D

If he grabbed the front brake really hard at 100mph with a mig welder in his lap he could fix that thing in a jiffy!

Luckily, my buddy the rider is OK.  He got a few bumps and bruises but otherwise nothing else.

I have seen this happen.  Last year during practice at the Parts Canada Superbike Nationals in Calgary the GSXR of our club #1 plate holder going into corner 1 at 300kph did just this.  He walked away...very sore, but walked.  I will find the pic.
