I assume decals are typically cleared over.  Is there an easy way to remove the tank decals, or will it require sanding, etc?

Just use a credit card or something along those lines... nothing metal.. and just slowly scrape off the decal... Thats what I did on my 696... Not sure if the 1100 is different, but it worked perfectly. Afterward, use some glass cleaner to remove any excess adhesive.

Do not do that!

Unless I'm mistook, DoWorkSon's 696 is a Dark, the dark tank skins have no clearcoat applied over the top of the decals and so it is possible to carefully remove more or less as described above.  But all the stock M1100 colours are clearcoated so its not so simple.  I dont know of anyway you can remove the decals without local destruction of the clearcoat, which AFAIK will require the whole thing re-cleared.

...and from a strictly technical perspective...

the edges of the clear will need to be 'feathered' back, and in 30 years of trying I haven't figured out a way to not damage the color also.

The parts will need to be completely refinished.
