I finally talked my friend into changing his rusty old junk chain. He asked if I could find the parts for him. It looks like stock gearing on a 2001 is 15/41. I found this kit http://www.drivesystemsusa.com/p/387202/did-520vm-chain-and-sprocket-set---ducati-750-monster-96-02.html and my question is should I stick with stock gearing or order it in a 15/43?

Definitely gear it down....

You might even want to go 15/44.

Did you check at ca cycleworks?

Chris usually has killer prices on chain and sprockets.

Depends.  What sprockets are on the bike now?  Is he happy with the present gearing?  Each tooth will increase the RPM by about 250 RPM.  The clutch will be easier to deal with at lower speeds and acceleration will be more brisk.  Highway RPM will be higher.  Since top speed on the 750 is drag limited you will probably see no loss if the bike is a strong runner.

I run one tooth higher in the rear.  That compromise works for me.

Stock gearing now. He'd like to get a little more pull down low. I think I'll stick with 15/43

I'll shoot Chris an email.

Thanks guys.

I got a 43 & chain from Chris like 6 years ago.  Turned the bike into an off-the-line rocketship.  I defintely noticed a loss in the top-speed department, but I have a different bke for that.  Don't take the Monster over 100 much - always think it has another gear!
