First off, the Monster S4R I own is my first bike.

Now, getting more comfortable with riding, and knowing that suspension setup is crucial, I'm doing some research on it.  The thing that I keep reading is that the Monster's shocks are generally soft for average riders, and being 250lbs I'm probably not average.  Although I'm working on the weight thing, I'd like to get springs set up for my weight in the mean time.  Are there reference guides to which springs are appropriate for different weights? If so, where would be the best place to purchase them?

The correct spring for different weights depends quite a bit on the particular bike and the way it is set up, meaning clipons or not...etc.

I'm positive there are members here with setups and weights similar to yours that can point you in the correct direction.

Very good to know, as I'm thinking about getting clipon's.  I suppose I'll give them a try before I decide which springs.

And to add it's an '05 Monster S4R, stock other then a slip on.

start researching which shops around you specialize in suspension and pay them to set it up. new spring, swap labor and preload adjustment should only run ~150$ and that includes the piece of mind that comes from having a pro set it up.

Wouldn't an S4RS rear Ohlins shock mount right in?  Maybe you could find a used one and tune that for about what a new spring install would cost.

The shock from and S4Rs would be a direct swap - but if it's using the stock spring, it would still need a spring swap

Sor you're saying all of that for about $150? I'm a bigger guy too, and I know I need a new rear spring as I bottom out with about any pothole. I have no Ducati shop anywhere with 200 miles, but the shop that I go to used to sell them, and so far haven't screwed me on any of the tire work that I've done there. I'll have to give them a call.

Racetech has an online calculator to configure your spring rates. I just looked up yours and it is not listed. It says to call the Techline. 951.279.6655  Most Monsters come with shock springs for your weight, but the forks are sprung for much lighter weight.

I have dealt with these guys before, and they are very helpful.

Don't bother using the RaceTech website for rear spring rate, it's FUBAR.

I'd say a 700 lb/in spring for the rear, and some 1.0 springs for your forks.

So at 235+ I would definately want to fo to a higher lbs/in and not lighter? I would assume, but that Race Tech site said a little lighter. It must be FUBAR, but the front spring made sense (it said .925). I appreciate the help!
