That piece is the retainer for the spring. It goes at the top of the damper rod in the groove just below the top cap.

I don't know how much oil.

Haynes      457 cc   from empty    or 79.5 mm level      Showa s.s8 oil   or somewhere between 10-20  I would lean to the 10 side  on good fork oil
I'll update this later at a convenient time Thank you for tuning in.....

Did you buy OEM, and if so do you have the part number for the Duc seals?

There's an ebay Duc parts sales guy that's local to me and I'm looking at picking up what I need to fix a leaky oil seal on my 96 M900.

yea oem parts, I will post the part numbers tomorrow when I get out of work. I didnt get the bushings tho, mine are in ok shape so im not going to worry about them, but i did get the oil seals dust seals and the clip that hold them in and the crush washer for the bottom bolt.

You need 2 of everything. ( if your doing both forks that is....)

Again, you should do the bushings too, I dont have the part numbers for those.

thanks.  I think my "oil leak" was just crap that dribbled down the fork after a long ride, but I'm keeping this info -- just a matter of time before I have to rebuild the forks.

also...it was kind of a pain in the ass to get that table formatted correctly....I hope someone finds it useful. Maybe getting the SHOWA parts from racetech is cheaper than ducati dealer? Genuine Showa parts

you don't need to pull the cartridges out to do seals, makes it much simpler.  the red circled piece is what you take off to get the spring, etc, out.

i use 5 weight in the showas to take the edge off the high speed compression damping.  i'd run them about 90mm, altho there was a bulletin early on saying to raise it 30mm from spec, which would make it 50 or 60mm ish.  was to help with full compression harshness i think.  best to respring it while it's apart with linear springs.

bmw rear drive too.  you poor bastard.
