I knew you didn't order sushi that night!!!

I distinctly remember you asking that crazy sushi chef if he made anything other then sushi and he whipped you up something.

My God, did we drink (or maybe me) a lot of Saki that night.

Good times with you at the joint and a fun ride home with the Misses.  [thumbsup]

Its the fatty under belly of the salmon.

Toro (toh-roh) is the term for the fatty part of the tuna, found in the belly portion of the fish. Toro is further broken up into two distinct subtypes, and they are more expensive due to their relative scarcity as a proportion of the entire fish. The two types of toro are:

Chutoro (choo-toh-roh), which is sometimes labeled chu-toro, is the belly area of the tuna along the side of the fish between the akami and the otoro. It is often preferred because it is fatty but not as fatty as otoro.
Otoro (oh-toh-roh), which is sometimes labeled o-toro, is the fattiest portion of the tuna, found on the very underside of the fish. This cut is fatty almost to the point of falling apart and can literally melt in your mouth.
Woohoohoohoo! Two personal records! For breath holding and number of sharks shot in the face.

Yeah-you work on a fishing boat for the better part of a decade.

Fresh raw fish looses it's appeal.

They have some restaurants around here that have sushi conveyor belts. You sit in a booth and plates go by with all different types of sushi on different colored plates. The price is determined by the color of the plate. You se something you like, grab it off of the conveyor. Great way to try new things.
I loved sushi before moving here and it's great that I can try things here you don't often find in the states.
I found that while I like the flavor of octopus, the texture was just as someone else described: rebber band like.

I regularly get the eel bowl at our little hole in the wall sushi place. Its yummy.

Never had raw eel though. Is it even served that way? The eel I get is freshwater and pan seared.

In Japan, they have guys on the street corner selling live eel out of buckets. I saw people take it out of the bucket straight into their mouth. I did not try that.

I'm not crazy about octopus (tako) either, but once I had it served with some lemon juice and that helped a lot.

So...

they charge by the number and color of plates in front of you?

Rainbow roll, and spicy tuna roll are my two favorites. Also, I love the miso soup that usually comes before the fish.  I love all kinds of sushi and sashimi, but I'm not a big fan of imitation crab or the shrimp tails that they some times put on top.  Eel and octopus have their place.  Ceviche is amazing.  Now I'm hungry. My 15 year-old's favorite is tako (octopus). He especially likes when the suckers stick to his teeth.

Personally, I can barely stand to watch.

We went out for sushi last night with a friend.

We ate ALOT of sushi.

First time at a sushi buffet.  I was a little hesitant but it was really really good.  The sashimi was not first rate but good.
