Author Topic: Oberon bar end signals - repair part?  (Read 2584 times)

I've got a pair of the Oberon bar end signals that has suffered some damage.  The (brass?) hollow bolt that screws into the collet inside the bar has snapped.  Everything else about the signal is fine; it still works and all the parts except this 5 cm overall length brassy-looking bolt seem fine.

I'm hoping that there's a cheaper alternative for repair than scrapping the entire indicator assembly.

So, anyone know where I can get one of these hollow bolts?  Are there Oberon repair parts available?  I didn't see any on the Oberon UK site, or on our sponsor Motowheels, though they do sell single signals for replacement, for $67 (very thoughtful, and my fallback plan).  Anyone have an otherwise broken Oberon part with one of these bolts that they'd be willing to part with?

mcmasters, find the bolt you need, find the jobber you need and drill a hole into it.

cost: $10 bucks max.

Contact Motowheels.  They'll help if you can.

I have the same bar end signals, and they're nice, but if they break (or break loose), they are a pain in the ass to reattach.  I wish there were a design that didn't require the wiring to be channeled through the bolt.

What is the thread diameter and pitch?  I'll help you look for a replacement.  (BTW, you/we should look for something soft to make the drilling easier.)

...or perhaps a square-head bolt that could be tightened without an allen key...

Looks like an M8 coarse (i.e. 1.25 pitch) shoulder screw, 4 mm hollow center (for the wires to pass through), 4.75 cm OAL, 2.5 cm of which is threaded, with an 8 mm long x 13 mm diameter head and a 6 hex drive.

Looking at the overall fitment, it appears that the screw length could be longer, the entire thing could be threaded, the head length could vary, and the head diameter could be up to 14 mm, all without causing significant problems.  So any M8 coarse x 50 mm with a 4 mm hollow would probably be just fine.

"Vented" screws already have the hollow core, but I haven't yet found one suitably long and with a large enough vent.  There's this, though it's too short and not really my color.   Grin

unfortunately, I have no clue what the hardware really looks like...but..

How about:

1) Threaded hollow rod + nut and jam nut

or

2) Threaded hollow rod + nut with set screw

this is the only thing that will break when a bike falls. and it's unlikely anyone would have spare parts.

I have had my bike down for like several times and I just contact oberon in uk and
david goodyear will take care of you, you just need the inner brass piece, collet.
and specify your bar diameter and size, he will find a correct collet ( i think this is what it's called, the brass part)

it's not expensive, he will hook you up. ( dont quote me on this one tho,)

front the actual bar end signal diagram indicates the bolt is M8x 40mm

both of the time I order a replacement,
the first time I think I order an extra collet.
but then british pound was strong..

price is shipped.  dont know if this helps... and the price was not cheap.. I was wrong.

Or I could buy a complete replacement assembly for $67, throw the two machined parts, the two set screws, and the printed circuit board with the LEDs in the trash, keep just the desired brass bolt, and still save enough for a few pints from Stone Brewing.

...which makes me think that that's not a "bolt only" price.

David Goodyear at Oberon was kind enough to send me a few of the desired replacement bolt for £3 each (plus about £4 more total for shipping).  Worked perfectly, and the damage is repaired.

83 was for the complete replacement minus the LEd boards on one side

I proved that I had the set and just because that i broke the parts
I drop the bike many times to have both signals damaged in some way.


glad that he provied a cheap hardware. he's always kind and fast response.

the billet fuel cap has some defect in the rubber seal rings. and I contact motowheels but they again
send the faulty seal rings, I contacted David, he air mail a seal rings for me at no charge.

good to deal with
