Hi guys/gals,

I am in the market to buy another monster - woo ha! This time with experience of my previously owned monster and that from internet research and off course you guys.

I have followed this forum over the past two years since first purchsing a 2003 Monster 620ie. I sold my monster about 5 months ago and have had withdrawal symptoms ever since. I'm ready to purchase again and am after some valuable information on the purchase of a used Monster.

I had initial ideas of purchising an S4R - after searching www.bikesales.com I am reconsidering. My interest is now a used 2009 Monster 1100. I have read threads on the S2R vs S4R and have found my dream S4R on this particular site. I'm willing to spend up to $16,000 yet have discovered that I can Purchase a new near M1100 for near the price of a used 2006 S4R. Now the S4R comes with much bling which if I was to start on the M1100 would cost a bit over time. I would like to hear views and comments about the purchase of either bike. I understand much personal preference comes into play however the when it comes down to maintenance and yechnical pros and cons we are playing a different ball game.

Hope to hear from you all.

Kind regards,

The Nugget Head

Does my bum look big on this?

I'm willing to say it.  I reckon the tank and headlight on the 1100 are ugly.

There.  Plenty reason to buy an S4R instead.

I know which path I would take but that is not what you are asking, is it?

It's quite clear that style is not a priority ... fridge or part trellis  Roll Eyes cheeky laughingdp

If you are considering a new style Monster I suggest you pop down to your local, friendly Ducati dealer and take one for a spin. I just found it too different to the 'classic style' Monsters for my liking ... you may love it, or not notice but for me, currently, it would be a determining factor.

From an ownership point of view (regardless of age) you have the 2v vs 4v cost implications to consider too ... but cost of bling could far outweigh that.

I reckon the tank and headlight on the 1100 are ugly.

I actually don't mind the tank or headlight ... its other styling things I have issues with.

+1 there

There are a couple of very nice S4R for sale here on this site - one in Qld and one in WA.  If I had the cash I would buy them to complement my S2R1000.

I guess it is all about style really - I love everything up to the new Monsters - I draw the line at the S2/4R.  I personally see the new M1100 being the equivalent to a 999 in styling - it was nice but people soon tired of the look, thus the reason for the reintroduction of the sssw and the fairing.  But to each their own!

Be wary of the power of the dollars you want to spend.  Whilst working to a budget is great write down a list of what you want and compare Monsters i.e. are you happy with vents in the tank, willing to pay more for servicing for the new monster M1100, service costs of 2 valve compared to 4 valve, power of the bike, exhaust and other mod costs as compared to a low km blinged S4R (they are out there).  I too did a lot of research and it came down to 3 basic criteria - dry clutch, already fitted aftermarket exhaust, and something a little rarer in colour.  Have fun and hope you come to the right choice for you!  [moto] waytogo

if the qld one is a blue S4R i think i know the owner, and the place he gets it serviced and it's a very nice bike. i have a S4R that i love, i mean i REALLY love it, it's incredibly versatile, fast, comfortable and a hoot to hoon around on. the radiator is there, just like the wet clutch is there on smaller monsters, some don't like them, some can live with them, i painted mine satin black to minimise the roller door look and it's much better. Oh, and it's waaaay faster than any 2 valver, and that's why they rubbish the rad and hoses. cheeky
I like the new monster too, but after riding one it would become dull quickly after the power of a 4 valve bike, but you don't miss what you haven't had so i'll say buy what you want, you will still be dissatisfied with the wrong choice long after you've forgotten what you paid. waytogo

Hi again guys/girls,

It’s fantastic to hear so many different points of view

To expand on my previous post...

Reading about the S4R and what others keep referring to is its POWER. I owned my 620ie for just over 2 years; I loved its handling and its classic red ducati naked look. I did however over time begin to understand its limits in power and its standard factory settings. After its purchase I really spent nothing more in the way of bling and done the servicing myself. I am also no trick rider yet took it to its limits and mine in regards to cornering and riding conditions. Reflecting on the experience and its ownership it was a great introduction to what Ducati Monsters have to offer.

Now with ball in tow I do wish to own a more powerful and attractive machine. I don't wish for crowd appeal (although I love turning heads) and want to test my riding skills on a more powerful and robust machine. The advertisement for the 2005 S4R 996 which I refer to lapsed unfortunately. Otherwise, I wouldn't have minded posting the link. However, the information I can provide (please don't quote me) is detailed below.

- Price approx $15,500
- 7500kms
- Year manufactured 2005/6
- Termi pipes
- Carbon fibre guards and other assorted bits
- Approx $7000 of extra mods and bling

I am viewing the bike this Thursdays. Until then I hope the advert is placed in Bike sales again so yee all can check it out. Who knows someone in here may know of its existence.

Personally I don’t really go for the new look Monsters. Keep It Simple Stupid is my theory. I love the quality and thought put into the New Monsters however appreciated the simplicity of my old 620ie. I am certainly considering bang-for-buck both in the short and long term. I certainly don’t want to buy a machine that is going to screw me in my back pocket and although I appreciate the attention to detail in Ducati care, deliver complexities in its servicing or maintenance schedules.

I hope that provides more clarity on the addiction I have developed. Please feel free to continue your comments – I yearn for knowledge people.

pfft first across the lights wins  cheeky (just stirring haha)

I agree that a S4R would be faster than a S2R1000 - dont get a S4 - you will be disappointed.  Grin

There are two awesome older style monsters for sale here at the moment:

- palookas S4R in Qld
http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=1171.msg628784#msg628784

- a S2R1000 in WA with quite a bit of engine work..
http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=1171.msg657175#msg657175

From what I have heard the 4V has quite a different power delivery than the 2V engines. Granted there are more horses with the 4V, but the 2V has plenty of low down torque (esp the 1000DS engine) and it is certainly no slouch, esp for street riding...

It depends what you want... Good luck with the search!

Now that's just mean Grin

But I do like my wet, sorta slipper clutch ... saves on clutch bling. Plus I have my genuine fake dry clutch imitator.

yeah, i was referring to palookas bike in my post, it's very good and has been maintained by the 2nd best ducati shop in brisbane, alex at LAE Racing is an excellent tuner and engine builder who knows his dyno and how to get the best from it!!
want an S4R? well worth a serious look, has lots of nice extras too.

don't let HP fool you, most riding is all about torque, the 4 valvers knock out about 10% more and that's what they feel like.

The S4R sounds good!
