its an an exhaust pipe. it redirects exhaust gasses to the rear. :)

I guess I walked into that one. Let me clarify. The rectangular piece of steel with the hex nut is the part that I was referring to specifically. This is on a 2007 S2R with stock cans. Don't know if this was a mod from PO or what. Curiously, the words "not for highway service" is stamped on the back of this piece.

whats on the other side of the hex?

Its used to hold those pieces togther so they dont move and you can get a better fit for your exahust cans. But why theres a hex there is beyond me. Perhaps its 2 tabs that they welded and installed a system onto, then bolted the 2 tabs together and welded it.

Here is the other side. Oh, and it says "Not For Highway Use" instead of "service", if one wanted to be specific. :)

from that angle it looks pretty thick. Is there a cross over on the bike?

Tap it does it sound hollow?

have u tried removing the nut?
It could be something to stick a diagnotistic tool in, and serve as a cross over, and also to structurally hold the 2 pipes togtheer

looks like a QD midpipe replacing the udder with a crossover with an O2 bung plugged with a bolt.

Sorry, I drilled down to the Motowheels part, there was a nice pic of the part for the S3R800 and I snagged the url - sorry

but it is the Quat-D midpipe for the S2R

Thanks. So I'm guessing the PO either had custom exhaust that he obviously wasn't willing to part with, or he just wanted to eliminate the udder. Either way, I still think it's funny that it says "Not For Highway Use" on it.

I had a Quat-D midpipe on my S4Rs (still have it is anyone is interested).  I think most non-factory exhaust systems/parts say that.  A legal thing probably.  Just don't ride on the highway - keep it in the city and you'll be fine.  (j/k)
