So, I've got my monster in the garage for it's first oil change, ~640 mi, and I can't get the drain plug to budge.  I'm just using a standard set of allen keys for the 5mm plug and I've actually permanently deformed (twisted) the allen key trying to loose the plug.  Am I missing something here?  It's a standard thread, right?  Not left handed or anything?  How hard should I try to loosen this thing, I'm afraid to strip the socket on the plug.........very annoyed at the moment  [bang]

First off, which year and model of Monster do you have?

I could *assume* it's a 696 or 1100....

It will likely require an allen bit driver.

+1.

I've also had to bust out the rubber mallet a coupla times for exactly this purpose.  Those techs just looooove to torque stuff down.

5mm? Are the 696 and such really 5mm? Seems awfully small... Older Monsters is a 10mm

Either way, you're going to need something with a lot more leverage than 2" of allen Key. I usually use my long handled ratchet or a breaker bar to make it easy to crack the seal.
-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.

I did finally loosen, it's an M1100 BTW, used a cheater bar on the end of my allen key.  Made an aweful snap  :o when it finally broke loose though.  Scared the you know what out of me.  I also put a 20 degree twist in my allen key!

It appears that there was some sort of thread sealer on the plug from the factory.  Hopefully it's not required as I did not put any on when re-installing.

Best and most reliable way to remove really tight allen head screws is with a hand/hammer operated impact driver. Don't bother getting a cheap one from WallyWorld or the like. They don't exert enough force to do much good. Best way is to bite the bullet and get a Mac or Matco or even (ouch) SnapOn. Same for the bit you use. Once you have these, no more worry about stripped or twisted allens.

i have a 40 year old K&D Tools impact driver that is still better than the WallyWorld one I got 3 years ago.

No, it's not required or suggested.  And don't overtighten that thing or you'll screw up your cases.  Just make sure it's sealed/torqued to spec and clean the area well.  Do a quick check for weeping when it's sitting and after running the bike.

Also, I don't torque the filter or drain plug to 'spec'.  Just repeats this awful removal all over again next time.  Calibrated hand feel works for me on both and also keeps me from stripping anything.
