Ok 2002 900ie has the hollow rear axle with the nut on the right side and some sort of mongo allen key hole on the other.

Is there a special tool for the allen-oid side or if not,

can someone tell me what size of what tool fits in the friggin hole?

and where I might buy one

Thanks

It's a 17mm.

Motion Pro makes a multi-hex tool, available in steel and aluminum.

Most moto shops tend to have 'em.

In my experience, the axle will generally stay put to tighten or loosen the nut.

That's probably only true if you have the tool, otherwise it'll spin.  [bang]

Thanks SD...that would do it. I already started to spin the indexing plate on the nut side so in all fairness I should try using the hex tool on the other side to spin that one too so my chew marks in the swingarm and symmetrically opposing  :-\

Yah, typical result for the janky Monster rear axle setup.
It's a disgraceful design.
