Here's a neat read on the evolution of the 916

A local shop here has this picture hanging on the wall - it's awesome:

I just posted a week or so ago about an agonizing decision I made between keeping my practical air cooled monster for daily city commuting, or trading it for an amazing deal on my dream bike, a 916.  Based on some great feedback here, and some sole searching, I decided to pass up on the 916.

...I still love that 916.

My 3rd favorite (after the Monster and the 916) would have to be the 998. It's got great lineage!

I've got a few Ducs but my favorites are my '97 916SPS and '99 996S. I love the older style graphics on the 916's fairing. I'm sure a lot of you do the same thing but I could sit in the garage with a cold adult beverage all night just staring at them! They have a timeless beauty and style. Sometimes I can't believe I actually have both of them. I must have done something nice in my previous life.

I like the way the new 848/1098/1198 bikes took some 916 genes into their styling. Not saying they look like a Tamburini, just modernized the styling and made it new. I know some would heartily disagree but that's just my 2 cents. Still, nothing turns my head faster than seeing a Tamburini Ducati going down the street. And that doesn't happen too often in this town.

if you ask me DNA should go back to that styling or move in the Cedici direction.  I just don't see the appeal of the new 1198 and 848 over my Monster, in my humble opinion.  The Multi however is a step in the right direction but that square face and beautiful tail is by far the best they've ever made.  Having said that I want a 998 one day.  Grin

I will own and love and hate a 748 or 916 one day...  With any luck, there will be at least one capital letter after the number designation.  Grin

if you ask me DNA...

what about the rest of the world? justsoyaknow, DNA is ducati north america (pretty much the north american marketing department).

should go back to that styling or move in the Cedici direction.

to me, the appeal of the 'sedici is what it is, not what it looks like.

it has a nice profile, but the bodywork (to me) makes it look a little bulbous/heavy.

the 1098, 1198, 848 is the perfect modern version of the 916, 996, 998 as far as looks go. I dont see how anyone could not agree with that.

i think you are right the d16 is a bit more heavy and bulbous design but i think its good evolution in a way of the original 916 design.

most of the new bikes are like the 1098 with a lot of scoops and angular, like the r6 and the sharp edges of teh yamahas and honda, except for the honda front.

the d16 styling though a bit heavy is definitely different than the current crop and if ducati were to go that direction they would be more along the lines of the evolution of the 916 design going to the mv F4 than anything else.  so that could be a good way to go so that they would be different than everyone else.

yes all of Ducati then but since I can only afford bikes here......well, for now anyway  Tongue

Although the bodywork is bulbous I still think it looks sexy.  I love the front more so than current generation Ducs.  I know profile and such is important but I don't like really skinny bikes - maybe the Hog I ride aides in this decision.
