One thing you would like to do again

A friend of mine who is now a Professional Golfer ( but at the time was an Amateur ) , we entered a 5 State, 2 man , 2 day , Amateur Best Ball Golf Tournament. (Best Ball means you take the best score of your 2 scores for the hole)

There were 130 (2 Man) teams entered and after the 1st day we were 1 stroke behind the leaders.

It was so exciting , all the thoughts running through my head of how I would try and play each hole the next day and what would be our strategy on some of the tougher holes and how we would react to playing with the leaders and what they might do.

One was a College Golf Coach and the other a number one player for a College Golf Team.

I don't remember how much sleep I got but it couldn't have been much.

Morning came and it was a beautiful early June day.

We would be the last group to tee off , so there was plenty of time to warm up and get nervous.

I had a lot of faith in my partner who shot a very low round the 1st day and I played solid. When our names were called to the 1st tee there was a feeling of electricity in the air.

All 4 of us hit good straight drives off the tee.

Whew...glad that was over , now I could breathe again.

As it turned out my partner hit his second shoot close and made his putt for a birdie and now we were tied with the other Team. We now had the Tee.

We played tight with them birdieing the par 5s with them and coming to the 9th hole , a long right sloping par 5 with out of bounds to the right w, trees and a slightly elevated green.

Their big , tall player who hit the ball a mile hit his second shot on the green not but 8 feet from the hole. My partner missed the green left and I to the right almost out of bounds under a tree.

I was just hoping to get close to the green with my shot since my partner ran his third shot by the hole some 12 feet.

Some how I chipped my ball and it rolled out from under the tree and through some tramped down grass up on the green and 4 feet from the hole.

I was elated.

It came down to just the big guy and me.

The big guy was putting for and Eagle 3 ....and he just missed. Now it was up to me to hole my 4 footer to not loose any strokes ......and I made my putt so we turned the 1st 9 holes all tied .

It was a great match. There were several other teams just a couple of strokes higher than we were so we were battling not just the Team we were playing with.

We teed off # 10 and both of our teams pared it.

Then on the tricky # 11 I got lucky and ran in about a 15 foot birdie putt that put us up by one stroke .

We were now 1 more under par than the guys we were playing with and didn't know about teams in front of us yet.

We both birded #12 , pared #13 and #14, then came to #15 and I hit one within 10 feet of the hole and so did the two other guys but none of us was able to make our birdie putts.

Now we arrive at the rather shortish par 4 #16. I tee off 1st and just kill my drive right at the pin.

By now we have a Gallery and they start screaming for the ball to go in the hole. ......well it stops about 20 feet short of the hole on this par 4 so I'm going to be putting for an Eagle 2 .

No one else in our group hits the green in one.

If I make this putt and neither of them chips in we go up on them by 2 strokes w, 2 holes to play.Neither of them chip in but they do chip close for birdies , my partner chips up close for birdie ....so now I have a free run at this Eagle.

Damn, ..........I just roll it over the lip of the hole and by a couple of feet.

No change in our standing.

#17, a par 4 hole , both teams par the hole.

Now we come to #18 .It's on top of a hill and the green is around a dogleg left but you can just barely see the green in the distance.

Someone had told me that Arnold Palmer played there once and drove it on the green in one.

Well anyway , we are one stroke better than the men we are playing with.

We tie the hole we beat them ...but we don't know what the best score in is. Someone in the Gallery says that there are some teams that played really good.

Without hesitation my partner steps up and puts this incredible monster swing on the ball and I'm thinking " He cut the dogleg ...could it possibly make it on the green ? "

Everyone made there Sunday best swing like they were swinging for the fence in Baseball.

As we walked off the tee my partner puffed out his chest and strutted ahead off everyone else.

Sure enough when we got close enough to be able to see a dot on the green I knew we weren't going to loose to the team we were playing with.

My partner didn't make his 2 but made his 3 which was good enough to keep us ahead by 2 strokes to win the Tournament .

We shot -15 under par on a par 71 Golf Course, my partner was medalist for the Tournament , we won some big Trophies and hundreds of dollars in merchandise but best of all was winning a 5 State Golf Tournament that had 260 players in it , plus getting interviewed on local TV and Radio..

Thats Great!  It feels so good to keep all your poop in one sock through an entire event and do well.  I've shot the National Rifle Championships several times along with some of the junior shooters I coach.  Keeping your head in the game and watching your "kids" use what you taught them and succeeding through a real tough event is darn rewarding.  Mental preparation and performance and a positive attitude is way more important than some of the technical aspects IMHO.  CONGRADULATIONS!
This isn't a dress rehearsal for life - this is it!

The one thing in life I would like to do again is go back to the bottom of Brae Hill on the Isle of Man , and re live the most awesome day of my life.....the centenary of the TT. To my friends who I shared that with -I love you all and I will never forget that day. :-* Thank you.

That sounds like a really great day.

I've been thinking about this and can't pinpoint one specific day I would want to relive. Don't get me wrong, I've had some good ones.

Maybe I haven't yet experienced that momentous day.

I've watched the bikes approach the bottom and round the corner there at Brae Hill on several DVDs of the TT and it would probably rank up there with one my most memorable days if I was there in person .

The Bikes are flat out down that Hill !

Lucky you  :)  :)

yes, a buck 90 is pretty quick........seeing the fairings bottom out as they make the turn and almost plant themselves into the curb as they scream past before  climbing up to Ago's Leap is extremely impressive. Being there with those ypu love most in the world is priceless. [thumbsup]

I watch one of the TT DVDs and then get on my 1098 R or S 1000 RR and go stormin' through the hills and wonder why I have the urge to let it all hang out.

If I was 40 years younger I might try to be a TT rider or at least a real Road Racer.

I've had 2 very bad crashes on my old S4Rs and I am more careful now especially on the R and RR.

They are seriously FAST !
