I fired my buddy's lever action .44 Marlin, and have become really enamored of the idea of a gun that can plink with .44 special ammo & hunt (at moderate ranges) with .44 magnum.

I love my Marlin lever .44.  I was hoping to take a deer this year with it but I only hunted fields for the most part.  Nice to have the dual round option.  Ill start my 6 year old with the .44 Specials when the time comes.

Finally got around to shooting our inherited Winchester Model 70 in .270 Weatherby Mag this fall -- I didn't draw an elk tag, but a friend did and was sighting in his guns & I tagged along. Fun day of shooting, and then I went to replace the ammo. Sweet mother of... $45-$85 for a box of  20 cartridges!  :o  Guess I'm going to have to learn hand loading...

save your brass!!  270 W is a 300HH case opened up, i believe

QuoteOther than that, we've got a box-stock 10/22 in the house (though this thread gives me some ideas) and a single-shot lever action 22LR (Ithaca, I think). While out with the .270, I fired my buddy's lever action .44 Marlin, and have become really enamored of the idea of a gun that can plink with .44 special ammo & hunt (at moderate ranges) with .44 magnum.

i have a late model 1892 which eats 45LC.  i wish i had gotten one in .357 as they also do .38 just fine -- ammo much cheaper.

is 44spl that much cheaper than 44 mag??

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Not so much cheaper, just less bark.

Yup, I kept all the brass!  Thanks for the tip on .357 -- I'll keep my eyes open at the local shop.

mine is a "saddle ring" 1892 with the hanging ring off the receiver and the super-large lever loop.  i am always amazed how small it is.  the only fault i have with it is the caliber (45LC) which is more expensive to shoot and VERY down on power.  45LC is about 10% more bite than 44 spl, which is not very harsh by modern standards.  shooting 45 LC in a rifle gives almost unnoticeable kick and fairly slow travel -- slower than typical 45ACP

similar to mine, but with the regular lever loop:

i love the 10/22 but i never got one

i have an old funky Marlin 989 M2 which is a copy of the M1/M2 carbine (but not full auto obviously)

I think it was made in 1968 or so.  Very old.  it has a serial # so it has to be 68 or later.

The safety is a little sign that says "Safety: don't pull the trigger if you don't want the damn gun to fire, dumbass!"  (i keeed i keeed)

I've put probably half a million rounds thru it since i got it, around 1980.  With glass, I can nail pretty much anything out to about 125 yds, beyond that it gets iffy.

My personal faves out of my cabinet:

Top is (was) a Ruger 10/22, now slightly modified for in-house use  ;).

Bottom is a Ruger M77R in .243 cal. Best deer rifle I've ever carried.

Ive been eyeballing bullpups for a while now.  How do you like the 10/22 kit?  Which one is it?

It's pretty cool, although they're a no-frills thing. Mine's a Muzzlelite.
